Granted, it was a rifle round. Crazy that it didn't go thru & thru at that range. Ballistics: doing work.

That was some fine and fancy shooting if you ask me. The shooter turned that guys switch off.

Actually, the TV news article linked within that PoliceOne article says:

The suspect is in critical condition. None of the hostages were hurt.

I didn't read that part. The way he dropped I figured I was watching a dead man. I wonder where they shot him? To drop someone that fast, either the spine was severed or they hit him in the right spot of his brain.

You may be kidding but what I said is a real thing. Not every head/brain shot results in a dropped bad guy. The area that will turn off the switch is actually smaller than many realize.

Duh!!! I just got the joke! Yep... I should have said the correct spot. Oh well, the video is cool anyway.

Poor criminal. He had to do this in front of an officer that missed the "Stopping a threat: Shoot them in the knee or hand" class. Isn't that how it works on TV?

I watched this a few times over lunch.

This is one area where I tip my hat to the Eotech reticle vs the Aimpoint (My CQT hangs in both camps). The outer ring of the Eotech, if at the right distance, can be used to compensate for the standoff height of the optic. The little hash marks take the guesswork out of holdover and allow you to deliver a surgical shot into the fatal triangle (formed by eyes to the base of the nose) at closer distances (30 - 40 ft or less) where optic height could play into zero, assuming a typical 25-100 or 50-200 zero.

This was my former sgt's favorite characteristic of his Eotech, but his gear was tailored towards a hostage situation (long time swat TL, attended and instructed numerous hostage rescue training events - to say HR was his forte is an understatement). He was quite unhappy when swat switch to T-1s.

That said, with the height of the windows on the storefront in the video, I would be real unsure of a nose shot with a 556 up close. After severing the brain stem, it could easily enter the store. I like the COM shot taken by the officer here. If you think you'll have some fight left in you after taking a 556 round to the chest from 40ft, I'm impressed.

Not exactly the smartest employment of a human "shield" by the perp....looks like he made it a lot easier for someone to take a shot than it could have been. Can't really comment about the risk of over penetration because I can't tell what angle the shooter had.

Maybe I am blind but I could not see the perps gun in that video. I was also unable to spot where he was shot. gigag04 clued me in with the post above. BTW... I agree with the assessment that taking a "T" zone shot here would have been a bad risk. Admittedly, I would not have bet on that guy dropping so fast from a chest wound. I wonder if it went through and hit the spine.

The only thing I can compare it with is the many many White Tailed I have taken down. I have hit them dead through the heart with a 25.06 and even a 30.06 and watched them run off 150 yards or more before dropping. I have also hit them in the spine,(by mistake as in aim was off), and they drop like that guy did.

I couldn't see it either, nor could I tell where he was shot. However, I could see his entire uncovered profile exposed in plain view, and the officers were within easy handgun head shot distance, so a rifle shot would be a snap.
