Re: Emergency bag in trunk
When Ilived up north that was standard practise in the winter months warm clothes, large plastic bag, good candle, chocolate bar(s) etc and we knew to leave the window open a little so the candle would not kill us.

Based on the twittering, I assume she could afford a smart phone and a data plan. But not basic essentials?

Not near as much these days, but when I was a telephone man I carried such a thing, biuth in my truck and my personal vehicle.
Real gun control, carrying 24/7/365
Re: Emergency bag in trunk
We keep one in each vehicle, and vary the contents to match the season

I live on the coast now, but I do carry an emergency bag. In it is sunscreen, a beach towel, water, hat, and ice chest.

We have one in each vehicle. They have enough for the kids and me to survive for at least 3 days. We would not be happy, but we would be hydrated with filtered water, and warm.

Every vehicle has an emergency box: Flashlight, jumper cables, folding knife, multi-tool, first aid kit (more than just band-aids!), duct tape, couple of water bottles (changed out on a regular basis), hat, rain poncho, sweat shirt, extra socks, some stable food, matches dipped in wax, couple of candles, folding shovel, extra ammo for carry gun. Don't leave home without.

I've got a emergency bag I bought at Dicks Sporting goods. It has the essentials and I have spare ammo to make sure I can make it home regardless the scenario.

Mine is done and I recently put rain ponchos in it. I like your idea of extra ammo, but I can't do that as we go on base too often and I know I would forget it was back there.
I'm curious what you keep in your bags in the heat of summer? My MRE's aren't going to make it in the heat. Nuts would seem to go bad quickly also.
If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you carry a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?
Re: Emergency bag in trunk
I stopped keeping emergency food in vehicles because of the Rule of 3s. Granted I don't have kids.
On the other hand, my friends with children say any food gets eaten long before it expires.

Re: Emergency bag in trunk
I pack the aluminum bag tuna, salmon and spam along with crackers in zip lock bags. Protein and crackers. For spouse and me, we don't need much to subsist for a couple of days, water is more important. Have not had a real issue with summer heat as I generally rotate the stuff out every three months or so. Key issue for food is enough to help get you home or to your other alternate shelter site. Home and alternate shelter site have significant food and water supplies.
Like you, I have the issue with working on a military installation thus, spare ammo is routinely only in the two vehicles I do not drive to work and I just have to remember to take it out Sunday night if I put it in my work truck over the weekend.
