violence growing in Austin

Wow - pretty much every day or so there is a shooting or stabbing, fatal hit and run, ect. When we moved here in 07 I never read these stories and now they are way to common. This latest one is interesting. 911 call about a suicide, 20 year old female dead by gun shot but no gun found?
Then of course the weekly fatal hit and run...

Austin Police responded to a call about an attempted suicide at 6:15p.m. When they arrived, they found a 20-year-old woman with one gunshot wound.
They transported her to UMC Brackenridge. The woman died at 7:02p.m.
Vaneza Bremner with APD said they are still trying to find out who made the initial call. No gun was found at the scene.

Austin police are searching for a suspect in a crash that left a pedestrian dead overnight, an official said.
The crash happened about 2:17 a.m. Sunday in the 2400 block of North MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) northbound, the Austin police official said

ROUND ROCK, Texas -- It's considered the second safest city in America, but new numbers show major crimes in Round Rock are increasing.
Department of Public Safety crime statistics show major crimes are up 8.4 percent in Round Rock. Police and the people who live here aren't surprised.
The same DPS report shows crime rates on the rise in other Central Texas cities too:
•Austin up 2.5 percent
•Cedar Park up 14.7 percent
•Georgetown up 17.1 percent

Crime statistics for the downtown Austin area show a 24.8 percent overall increase in violent crime and a 0.5 percent increase in property crime from May 2011 to May 2012, according to the Austin Police Department. In response to this growing problem, APD is taking crime-preventative measures, including increasing the number of officers downtown, placing extra lighting in high-crime areas and requiring all downtown officers to carry a whistle to better gain pedestrian attention in emergency situations, APD Assistant Chief Raul Munguia said.

It worked in the 1930s and 1940s. And it's safer than shooting off shots in the air.
I thought that police still carried a whistle for traffic control.

Austin is touching RR and it's on the I35. RR has had their share of OIS the past year. Fortunately they are NOT Austin so they don't get as much negative publicity. I live next door "Between a Rock and a wierd place" in Pville. Great city, safe city and with a minimum of 14 units out running radar a city you DO NOT speed in

Late last year I visited RR for the first time. RR might be an abbreviation for Rat Race.
Because of the name, I was expecting more pastoral surroundings.
Although I had a very good dinner at a small downtown restaurant, my biggest impression of RR was the horrible traffic and congestion.
Houston is probably just as bad, but I am used to it.

I was working from a coffee shop the week before last during the time a poor Chinese woman was beaten to death in broad daylight within eyeshot of the coffee shop. Still no clues from what I understand. Yes it is getting more violent here without a doubt.

The Austin population has grown tremendously in the last few years. Lots of Californians there now. Jaywalkers who cry like babies when they are arrested are up 200%.

Never realized we were actually neighbors -- howdy!
We've been in this particular section of the Austin area for about two years now and have grown very fond of it. It has a great community feel. My neighbors' kids play football in the street most evenings and call me ma'am. Nothing but good experiences with the police -- they're at lots of community events and my kids adore them. Their citizens' academy also did some good toward recovering my husband's negative opinion of police after years of living in Austin.
When my husband and I got married, he already owned a house in far northwest Austin. I'd grown up in Cedar Park and Leander. I kept telling him we should move out of the city and he didn't think it would make a difference since we were so far out anyway. He's singing a different tune now.

Ain't that the truth. You'd have to go back 40 years to find an Austin that was half way sane. I remember those days. (Just barely)
