Saw this on the news this morning. Not many details. My only concern is what if this was a case of someone mistaking where they were (the man thinking he was at his house when he was actually at hers). This could happen for a variety of reasons (intoxication, influence of drugs, mental illness, prescription drug side affects).
I'll be interested to see how the Grand Jury handles this case with her firing through the door.

TPC 9.32(b) clearly states deadly force is "presumed reasonable" when defending against someone attempting to enter unlawfully and with force the actor's occupied habitation.
It is unfortunate that the neighbor was too drunk in public to know where he was. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I don't disagree. The report doesn't have enough details to make a judgement about circumstances.
I was trained from the time I started shooting to know what your target was and what was behind it. That always sticks in my mind as I consider engagement scenarios. I've never been in the situation this lady was in so I can't say what I would have done were I in her shoes.
Looks like according to the TPC, she was justified.
I would just hate to be in those shoes and then find out later I shot the mentally challenged friend of a neighbor who made a mistake on the address.
Thanks.

Deputies said the woman heard something on her front porch around 9:30 p.m. Monday. She looked out and saw a young man outside. She said she yelled for the man to leave, warning him that she had a gun.
Where I come from, we call that a clue.

If the facts are truly what has been reported so far -- essentially drunk man tried to gain entry to wrong house -- then this is a lesson in natural consequences that a lot of folks need to take to heart. Getting drunk doesn't remove the possibility of consequences for poor decisions, but it does increase the chances of making poor decisions. Ipso facto, it increases the odds of facing unpleasant consequences. I regret that this poor woman felt the need to shoot the fellow, but I am glad she had the tools and mindset to take care of herself when she felt it was warranted.

If she warned him and he still tried to try to enter her house, who knows what else he may have done?

The likelihood that your neighbor's friend would attempt to forcefully enter your house, at night, even after you're inside and yelling at him to "go away, I have a gun" is probably pretty slim. The chance that you'd wind up shooting through the door instead of looking out the peephole makes it an even slimmer chance that'd happen. Old ladies at home by themselves, though, can skew the percentages.

One would assume that a firefighter, much like an LEO, would live a "cleaner" life and not get intoxicated to that point.
