Berkeley CA elementary student is a bystander to bullying language. He is give the choice of suspension or clean the toilets for two weeks. He chooses clean the toilets and shortly thereafter comes down with whooping cough. Berkeley has now changed their policy bystanders to bullying language will be suspended.

Being that it is Berkeley, I guess the Mom did not get him immunized and being that it is Berkeley, they don't require immunizations to start school.

Bystander to bullying language is an offense?

You can't make this stuff up!

More crummy parenting. She knew the rules. Bully bystanders are punished. It's in the rules. Momma should have been there to protect her baby.

Or

Maybe, common sense should prevail and the punishment for being a bystander should be eliminated and kids encouraged to step up and defend themselves and their fellow classmates. Hope the school gets nailed for such s ludicrous policy.

Also, my kid would be in so much trouble if I found something like this out six days into his punshment. He would never make that bad choice again.

Yeah, no kidding... I'm reminded of that old saying, "Every time you make something idiot-proof, nature makes a better idiot".

Perhaps, I'm overlooking the obvious, but was punishing the bully ever mentioned?

If we punish the witness to bullying, then aren't the witness's being bullied or ...?

Plus, what's the witness supposed to do in order not to be punished?

When I was a boy we either helped the kid being bullied by being proactive (piling on and slugging the stuffing out of the bully) or slinking away, hoping not to be noticed.

:nono: Public schools punish kids who stand up to bullies. It's been that way at least 20 years.

I would imagine that would get you suspended from most schools now due to a zero tolerance policy on fighting. I suppose he was supposed to "call the authorities."
I probably won't get flamed as much on this board as on many others, but I'm really starting to think that some form of martial art should be required physical education. I'd also require a class on firearms before finishing High School. And I'm not talking Mixed Martial Arts. But schools could offer boxing, or beginner Judo or Karate. We're training a whole generation of Americans to look to other people to solve their problems, their differences, and for protection. They are being taught that some professional or authority figure must be in charge.
I'm still looking at some of the photos and articles about the invasion of Normandy. I don't think the schools of today would produce a "Greatest Generation." Even as late as the 70s in rural southeast Arkansas, you were expected to take care of yourself to some extent. I was bullied in the 7th grade. I wanted the teachers to punish those bad kids and make them leave me alone. Instead they pointed out to me that the main guy "bullying" me wasn't any bigger than me, and that I could take care of this on my own. That would solve the problem 24/7, not just when I was at school under teacher protection. That wasn't the answer I wanted, but looking back it was the best possible way to handle it. The lesson I learned there has stayed with me the rest of my life and helped in many situations other than that one incident. It may even be the most important thing I learned in all of my schooling, including college. I don't think that is a lesson I could get in a public school in the 21st century.

So there are a few issues here. #1 Why is a bystander punished for anything? That is bull.

#2 This happened in CA. CA has a rather large immigrant population that has had exposure to more diseases than we have. We can vaccinate all we want, but certain diseases have proven somewhat resistant to the vaccine. Many people catch whooping cough that have been vaccinated against it, then become carriers themselves bringing it to their vaccinated friends. It is quite simple the more carriers you have of the disease the more of the disease you will have. Not to mention that some of the vaccines are shed in the fecal matter after vaccination. Soooo....this kid was cleaning toilets. It could have been a recently vaccinated child that gave him whooping cough.

#3 Vaccines save lives (on a large scale). Good sanitation practices save more lives. If we are gong to have kids cleaning toilets they need the same protective gear and procedures that the adults would have in the process. They also need to have an adult supervise them, during the process.

Bottom line. These diseases are making a come back. The reason why is not completely understood, but it is mutual-faceted I am sure (vaccines not working as well as advertised, unchecked immigrant population, adverse vaccine reactions (some extremely serious) keeping some from being vaccinated, people being stupid, perhaps some mutation in the disease etc etc). Vaccination may or may not protect you. If you are a parent I suggest finding out how to treat measles, and whooping cough as those seem to be the players right now. Measles is not too bad. Fever reducer, a dark room, and chicken soup go a long long way (I also recommend a good calcium and vitamin D and C supplement). I have not experienced whooping cough, but we have good cough suppressants now, and nebulizer treatments have worked wonders with the RSV and pneumonia we have dealt with in our house. There are some herbs that help as well. They can be looked up.

Whooping cough (Pertussis) is a respiratory disease. It is not shed through fecal matter. It is passed by droplet contamination, and aerosolization (someone coughing nearby without coving the mouth).

If you have not been vaccinated within the last 10 years, and you are going to be around a new born, you need to get vaccinated.

Edited to add: Vaccines do not cause autism

My concern is less that he contracted Whooping cough. My concern is that he was punished in the first place and the type of punishment. I find it ironic some schools are so worried about kids bringing and applying sunscreen and others think it's OK to subject an 11 year old to other people's human waste matter as a punishment.

Yep so says everyone who has not experience it. When you watch it before your eyes...that is something different.

Autism is not the only concern with vaccinations. There are also horrendous reactions to ingredients within the vaccines. Lethal reactions than can change lives, forever. It is not always an easy decision. You make your choices based on your family history with vaccines, let me make the choices for my family. I am not anti-vaccine, just cautious after seeing repeated vaccine injuries in my immediate family.

If it is not possible to pass it via fecal matter then why was the whooping cough and the toilet even part of the conversation?

Good point.
