Well, the wife has taken the plunge, and the plastic will be in the mail soon.

She's had a Sig 229 in .40 for awhile now, but we both think that it will be a bit of a burden to carry around for such a small lady. (We're probably going to be selling it, so if you're interested, please keep a look out on the "sale" page, or send me a message!)

We went looking this weekend and ran across the Taurus Millenium Pro series, and were very impressed with the way that they felt. Of course, the one that felt best to her was the .45, as she's got long fingers so she needs some good distance from backstrap to trigger so that she's not pulling forever before the trigger breaks. I'm a little concerned with a couple of things, and I'd love for some of you people to set my mind at ease, or tell me to run for the hills.

1. Does this gun in a .45 kick like a mule? I know it's small, and a polymer frame, so does that equal "kick" like my brain tells me it should? I carry a Kimber Ultra in .45, and she likes that just fine.

2. I've heard good things about Taurus lately. I'm assuming they used to be not so good. What do you think?

3. Is there a way to fatten up the backstrap of a polymer pistol? Just those slip on rubber deals?

About $295.00 out the door price...Not too schabby...

I've heard nothing but good stuff (functional-wise) about these pistols...

Looks to me like these sub-compact firearms are making a resurgence in our market lately...

I've been carrying a Millennium Pro 9mm for awhile now and love it. Has about 500 rounds through it with no problems. Very accurate and controllable. I'm gettin' a hankerin' for one of the PT145's next. Love this little gun.

Regarding question #3...

There's not much else in the price range of just over $300 for a small .45 poly pistol. However, if fit is very important and you could consider .40, you might look at the Walther P99C, which is the compact version of the great P99. It has interchangeable backstraps, which might allow a better fit. It will however cost more than a Taurus.

I think that Glock has a compact .45 as well (don't follow the Glock line). It won't have interchangeable backstraps, but the distance from backstrap to trigger did seem to be fairly long. It would be a great choice, if it fits and the extra cost isn't a hardship.

Being able to choose the correct backstrap has allowed my P99 to fit my hand better than any other auto I've ever tried. Something to consider, anyway....

In your price range the Bersa maybe the best bet for the price. My compact 9 has been uber dependable. At the bottom of this link is the compact .45s.
One of those will be my next carry piece, probably the stainless.

I had a Taurus PT145, the Millenium .45acp. I liked the way that it shot. To me it did not have much kick. Yes it has more kick that a full size gun has, but I was able to control it. The one problem that I had with it and why I sold it was that it would drop the mag under recoil. I know that I could have changed the Mag release spring and it might have fixed it. I learned to keep the mag in by putting my pinky under the mag when I would fire it. As for the grip size, I did use one of the slip on grips with the groves on it. It does not change the grip size that much, but to me made the grip feel better. I had put about 1000 rounds down range with it when I sold it. Looking back now I wish that I had not sold it. When I sold it there was not alot of holsters for it, but it seems that most holster makers have alot for it.
Sitting here typing this makes me want to contact the guy that I sold it to and try and get it back from him.
All said, it is a good gun. My wife who has not shot alot even shot it and liked it. She has long fingers too but was able to shoot it well.

I sometimes carry my PT145 and I have shot it a lot. It is a very nice shooting, and utterly reliable handgun. I have no complaints whatsoever. Some people do not like the Heinie sights. If you need input on how to change them out, send me a PM.

I've got one of each in 40 and 45. I love shooting them both. the PT140 has a sharper recoil than the PT145. I put one of the slipon grips to make it more comfortable for my hand. Very good guns and lots of fun to shoot.
