I was in a classroom setting this evening with middle school children.
A night Bible study, in a classroom, @ a church.

I am waiting for my CHL, and will be able to carry at this location.

I have begun to play out scenarios in my mind, as I have seen recommended on this message board.

I was deeply reminded of the fact that our school teachers (and other school employees) need to be able to have protection
while they are in a classroom.
Times have clearly changed and we can not expect our teachers and school children to just be sitting ducks, hiding in a classroom while
a shooter is going through the building.

I am hoping that Texas is going to be taking the lead in this.

And I also have a daughter in college, about to graduate in a few weeks with a Teaching Degree. She will be in an elementary classroom. She
has been around firearms all her life.
Doesn't really matter, I guess. People can be trained and become proficient.
I think we owe this to the children in our schools.

It's too late for that. Other states have already blazed the trail. However, if the majority party stops dragging their feet, Texas has an opportunity to secure a comfortable spot in the middle of the pack.

One way to shorten the path is to kick Joe Straus out of the Speakers chair next session.

Are teachers allowed to carry in other states?
Or are there states already in the process of making this happen?

Texas teachers can already carry. With permission of the isd board.
Many isds already have authorized carry for teachers.

The Texas Legislature has also passed a bill(in 2013 I believe....correct me if I'm wrong) authorizing local school ISD's to assign "School Marshals" to be armed in classrooms. They must be employed by the local school district, & have gone through extensive training, and possess a CHL.

Slowly, but surely, or schools are becoming safer, IMO.

By law, our teachers have been able to carry in the classroom for quite a while. It is the schools and school districts that are preventing that from happening. The Harrold ISD was the first in Texas to allow it and now, several years and school shootings later, some others have followed.

By law, Texas Penal Code 46.03 makes it a felony to have a firearm in school buildings. Having a CHL doesn't change that.

It is true that a school can affirmatively give written permission, and cops can carry, but for the vast majority of Texans it's a felony.

It is a felony only if you do not have authorization. Most schools will not give their teachers or the parents authorization. A college student or teacher can carry at any college or university in Texas with authorization from the school. Most universities or colleges refuse to give autherization, so the legislative route has to be explored.

The law allows the schools to make the decision. Some have allowed it, but most have not.
