Robbers use customer as human shield, shoot security guard
Two robbers force manager to back of store where security guard is. Guard opens fire. Robbers flee, grabbing woman to use as shield, she got away outside store. Guard follows robbers, got into "physical altercation," was shot in leg. Robbers got away.
"Human shield" complicates things.

Only because said human shield was unarmed. Otherwise, this would have been over quickly.

Learn to shoot better and unless the shield completely covers the target it won't be a problem.

Even if you can't carry a gun, a knife can make a big difference. Remember the hostage scene in Face/Off?

Heck, a good mule kick at the knees or hard stomp at the arch of the foot, followed up by an elbow to the kidney and knee in the face as he's going down. Unfortunately, most people these days are psychologically disarmed, no matter what they're carrying.
Had an associate who thought it would be funny come up behind me in the line at McDonald's and grab the $10 bill out of my hand. By the time I recognized him and let him out of the arm bar and choke hold, he had a different attitude towards such actions. Unfortunately, a real "grab and run" theft like that will work more often than not because most people simply don't have the mindset to respond in time, even if they had a lot more practice than I do in how to respond.

And it was his own knife that he had given her!
