No, he didn't accidently shoot his son. He shot deliberately, not knowing who his target was. Perhaps there's more to the story than what was reported, but to me, it looks like a bad shooting. Shoot first & ask questions later, does not always work out for the best.

Are you going to ask for Introductions before you shoot a burglar?

If there's any possibility it's my son, yes.

If I lived alone, or only my wife & I and she was in bed next to me, of course not. If there were more family members in the house, don't you think it prudent to think that what I heard might be them fumbling around? To the point of investigating before I start blazing away? Besides, a possible intruder, IMO is NOT justification for the use and exercise of deadly force.

I had one of those kids that like to sneak in/out in the middle of the night. His biggest fear was getting shot sneaking back in. I would not be coming out with both barrels blazing but I would be barking orders and if they were not complied with I would take whatever necessary action to protect my home. Could I have shot my son, well yes that's the risk of sneaking in an out and I am sure I would live with regret the rest of my life, however I would be alive to regret. If you don't think a stranger in the dark in your home is a threat more power to ya.

:iagree:

If you've got a home defense firearm you should have a light on it or right next to it. If you don't want to spend $200 on a good unit you can get cheap yet reliable ones that could end up saving your life along with those who have keys to your house.

I have met my son in the hallway twice with a light and a gun. That was all it took for him to start announcing himself, even if it meant a posterior chewing for waking us up, at least he didn't get dead for not announcing.

The Crimson Trace light guard is a good option also. Puts the activation button right on the grip for one handed operation also.
