3-year-old Texas boy accidentally shoots himself in head, police say

I put this in the crime blotter forum because I believe that any action by an adult that allows a 3 year old to get hold of a gun is a crimal act.

It IS a criminal act. Words cannot express my anger or sadness. I pray for that poor little boy's soul.

The police are still trying to figure out how he got a hold of it? Was there a safe and did momma give the toddler the combination? Really? C'mon guys!

Another sad result - possibly because handgun owners don't know how to manage their handguns. I think If the handgun is a SA, then it shouldn't be in a hot, round-in-the-chamber, condition around little kids. Little one's would have a struggle racking the slide on most SA's. All they have to do is reach around and pull the trigger. If it's a revolver, then good luck to everyone.

The argument being that the recommended way to carry when concealed is not the way to leave the gun if unattended and unlocked? Would I leave a Glock with a loaded magazine and a round in the chamber where my grandson might find them? I do have several around the house in concealed locations with full magazines, not fully inserted and no rounds in the chamber. I can rack them but he can't. I do sacrifice some time if I need them, but not much. All of my revolvers are in the safe and all have speedloaders which don't help much in the safe.

I still have kids in the house. If a gun is not on my person it's in the safe, period end of story. This is what works for me. YMMV.

"...the recommended way to carry when concealed is not the way to leave the gun if unattended and unlocked?..." I think that's correct. I also am concerned about the education (or lack of) about the management of the firearms. I know personally CHL holders who carry a semi-auto handgun, who don't know what I mean by "a round in the chamber.." Their reaction is usually something like, "What's a chamber?" These are the people who scare me, especially when they're around little kids. For example, when my 4 yr old granddaughter is with me, my handguns are totally hidden from her..stored in my GunVaults where I can quickly enter the code and get armed if I need to. When she leaves, I carry in a holster on my belt. People who 'hide' their loaded handgun in a purse or bag when a little kid is around are asking for trouble.

A friend of mine at church knows the family and they are very good people. I won't/can't go into the details. It is a horrible tragedy and one from which people will never fully recover.
