The mag release button rusted stuck. Could not eject a mag. Given, I haven't fired or cleaned it in a few months. I saw the brown stuff around the button. I thought it was from the holster. Never occured to me to be rust. After a lot of lube and some tapping I got it to eject and semi-function. It's now at the gunsmith. Obviously this gun requires periodic cleaning. But even then, the mag release is an area that I've never paid any attention to.

I work in a very hot environment and I sweat a lot. I've had holsters and belts bleed all over my clothes. So, it's hot. I never had any corrosion problems with a Sig 239 or Kahr PM9.

I've noticed that all the Coast Guard guys on the Gulf carry Glock.

Sounds like a good lesson. Also reminds us all to do frequent checks regardless of make or model. I use Break-Free CLP which has been doing a good job for several years now. A little dab will do ya.

And this is why I carry an ugly Glock. I try to like other guns like the shield but always wind up pulling a Glock out of the safe.

Is yours modified? The reason I ask is my shield has a polymer button for the magazine release. I don't see a way for it to stick due to rusting.

I may have to investigate mine further.

Mine is 100% stock.

If you will eject your mag, turn the handgun upside down and look in the grip with a flashlight, you will see a wire extending from the backside of the ejection button. Behine the ejection button there is a metal mechanism tied into the before mentioned wire. That entire metal mechanism was heavily rusted. While looking in the grip depress the ejection button repeatedly to help spot the wire and mechanism.

One correction, the Coast Guard is not usung Glocks. They are using the Sig 229.

I had seen this issue brought up on a Smith & Wesson forum. At that time I had not had any issues with mine rusting, but due to others that did, I make sure and apply a liberal amount of oil (Eezox) on the mag release, when cleaning.

BerettaDave, It is definitely metal. Put a magnet on it and verify. They could have changed it recently. From what I've seen, if you've got metal mags, you'll have a metal mag release, and plastic mags = plastic mag release.
