Former CNN correspondent shot during attempted robbery
Lynne Russell told KRQE News 13 they were staying at the Motel 6 Tuesday night when a robber pointed a gun at her abdomen when she went to get something from her car. She said the suspect pulled her into the room and her husband, Chuck De Caro, got into a shootout with the robber. The suspect was killed and De Caro was injured and is expected to survive.
All kinds of interesting....Driving from DC to California with a gun in the car?
- FOPA qualified?
- Hypocritical for CNN employees to own guns?

I always like Lynne... Glad the right guy wound up dead.

IIRC, Lynn(e) Russell was a private investigator when she was not on the air with CNN.
As a PI residing in Georgia, it's probable that she has her GA CHL.

This raises a whole lot of scenarios since she may have angered someone she was surveiling
for a major league court case.

So it's possible that she was actually targeted by an irate party for her PI work.

Here is a pro gun article about the incident.

Husband referred to as hero. Black belt former Green Beret and LEO now a private eye.

Says both licensed firearm owners.

Even for a CNN type, spending the night at a Motel 6 is entirely too dumb to be possible.

I'm guessing they were on the job and got made.

The story does say "they were on a working vacation."

But what's a couple to do when there's not a Hilton nearby? Sometimes, a Motel 6 (with the light burning in the window) is the best of the alternatives.

This, version of the story, has a very interesting detail.

The pair worked in concert to get the husband armed.
Russell and de Caro — both described as expert shots — were legally carrying concealed handguns, she said. She said she offered to search her purse for something of value to hand over to the gunman — and slipped her gun into the purse, which she then handed to her husband.

"'Is there anything in here we can give him?'" Russell said she asked. "Chuck said, 'Oh, yes, there is.'"
Nice story but I think maybe she is honing her skills for a fiction writing career with that story. Not saying it didn't happen that way, but the dialogue and actions sound an awful lot like something you would see in a movie or read in a novel.

The story describes her as "Russell — herself a licensed private investigator and former Fulton County, Georgia, sheriff's deputy with two martial arts black belts".

I think it was just a local-yokel druggie robber who picked the wrong people to mess with.

Another article says they were traveling with their dog. As someone who has traveled with a dog I can assure you than many hotels don't allow dogs and most of those that do only allow dogs that weigh 35 lbs or less...that eliminates most of the popular dog breeds. We couldn't find very many motels that would accept our 170 lb Great Dane. I've never even owned a dog that weighed less than 70 lbs. That makes having to settle for a Motel 6 entirely plausible to me.

In a phone interview on the news, Russell explains that they had dinner with a friend. They we're planning to continue driving after dinner but decided to get some rest and leave early the next morning instead. She mentioned that they had a dog with them so the Motel 6 seemed like an appropriate place to stop.

I am still not sure of the details, but it appears that the former CNN couple was quite capable of defending themselves.

It is too bad that Chuck De Caro was wounded, but fortunately he will recover. :thumbs2:

The last line of that story is the money quote.

Doesn't it irk the daylights out of you that this couple can travel from DC to California armed and loaded without any hassle, but you can I have to jump through all sorts of hoops to obey the law? Sure seems like equal protection under the law would apply to these scenarios.
