8 year old girl was outside at her home and told the neighbor boy he couldn't see her puppy, so he got his dad's 12 gauge and killed her.

RIP

A tragedy could have been prevented if the parents of that boy would have just followed the basic rules.

Kids learn this from the fecal matter they are allowed to watch on TV. We live in a sick society!

:iagree: Sure thing. Society supports it and most are afraid to admit!

My dad started me hunting rabbits and squirrels with him when I was 4 years old. We killed and ate a lot of animals. That didn't cause me to grow up and become a murderous cannibal.

My son plays video games and at age 13 has 5 years of martial arts training. He loves sparring and has several state titles to his credit. He has never been in a real fight.

It's all about parenting. Our kids become what we make of them. If you want your children to have your morals and ethics, you need to make sure they spend more time with you than others who might influence them.

Spare me the "OMG violent movies and video games are making children kill each other!" outrage. At this point there have been several generations born and raised during the video game era and it hasn't turned into anarchy yet.

Here's the most recent study on video games and violence. After 20 years of data, they still "need more data."

No, but by the time we are adults, we would have seen several thousand shootings on TV, and in movies, and seen the same actors we saw shot dead appear on other programs. It must not hurt to be shot. No big deal!

:tiphat: Pardon my two cents here, notwithstanding the video games and movies influence or lack thereof, the access of a loaded 12 gauge by an 11 year old child facilitated the tragedy. Just me saying!

Gee, that would almost be like placing responsibility on an adult. We can't have that, because a special little snowflake like that parent can't possibly be the blame! It must be movies and TV and video games and Obama and global warming and cholesterol and gay marriage!

When the parents in a society are more interested in themselves and seeking pleasure than raising their children, that society is ripe for a reset. The lack of real parenting is the issue in too many cases like this -- sidelines like video games are simply another variable along with this constant. We are reaping the whirlwind of social experimentation and public policy that destroys families -- the bedrock of society -- and attempts to replace them with "programs".

Parents are not there to be our children's best friend (though we sometimes are). We are to be parents first and foremost -- providing the necessities of food, clothing and shelter, as well as instruction, consistency, nurturing, discipline, a values/behavioral model, encouragement and support, to name a few. People who fail to provide these by oversight or by willful negligence are doing a dis-service to themselves, their children and posterity. Policies that erode the importance of families likewise are poison to a healthy society.
