Confusion From The State

Tried to go online and do my instructor renewal today. As usual, got the error message. Called DPS and waited for about 20 minutes, finally got a lady who said to print out everything and send it in by regular mail. Asked her what to print out and she said CHL 77, 85, 86 and 90. Hung up and printed everything out. Saw that the CHL 77 said nothing about instructors and appeared to only be for regular renewals.
Called back, waited about another 20 minutes, got another lady who said that we do not need the 77, just the others.
Does anyone know? Apparently DPS doesn't. I would like to only do this once.
Thanks

Ross,
I did mine online about three months ago. The only additional thing I had to provide them was the CHL-90 since my NRA Instructor credentials on file with them were still valid. Since its been awhile I don't recall if i had to check the box authorizing them again to access all the background / medical data & the affidavit that I'm abreast of current laws, but I'd go on the assumption that I did it as part of the online process.

With that said, I'd suggest you mail them the CHLs 90/85/86, and if you're (NRA) Pistol Instructor certificate has been updated since your 2013 CHL Instructor renewal I'd also send that so they don't ask for it later.

The follow up email I received said they had everything they needed, and to stand by for instructions to finish the process. The last requirement I'm guessing will be to certify we've watched the video on retention, whenever it's ready.

Hope this helps.

Well, I sent them the 85, 86, 90 and copy of nra instructor certification, along with my check by certified mail. Hopefully everything works out. Is there any word on a video on retention? Or anything else we need to complete?

Several others have posted in various threads that the website will be back up between this Friday & Saturday, and on other threads a couple weeks ago posted that the retention video would be 'available in a couple weeks'.

I'm anticipating that the video may be on their website when the website comes on line this weekend, but that's pure speculation on my part based on the timing of what others have posted. As long as there's no laps in my instructor credentials (ie, completed by end of December) I'm not gonna stress on it.

Here's some more "Confusion" for you, I finally received a reply from DPS yesterday, and it said that the website is down and should be back up on the 27th!

SIGH!!!

OK, even more confusion. As I reported above, I did not submit the CHL 77 since the second lady I spoke to told me not to. I submitted the other forms and waited a couple of weeks. A couple of days ago I received a letter in the mail from DPS saying I had not sent in a proper renewal application. Guess what they included in the letter? A CHL 77 that I needed to fill that out and return.

So, there's 2 different ways to renew(or pay the fee) for the instructor certificate. #1- You can pay online with a credit card, if you do this then you only need a CHL-90 form sent in. #2- You can pay by mail with a check or money order, if you pay by this method then you need: CHL-90, CHL-77, CHL-85 & CHL-86. When the website went down many chose option #2 above.

My point is that I was given two different stories by two different DPS employees in the same office within an hour or so of each other. I followed the second set of instructions I received which turned out to be wrong. Obviously I could not use the online option since I kept getting the same error message that everybody else received when they were trying to use that option.
By the way, my regular CHL (now LTC) needed to be renewed is it expires in January. I went online, renewed that and received my new license within about three weeks. I don't understand why it is so easy to renew an LTC online and so difficult to renew an instructor's certificate.
