These kind of thing amaze me. Like the campers in Palestine. I don't understand how this one guy "over powers" two people armed with rifles. Maybe if the guy stalked and shot them. But "overpower" sounds like a physical scuffle. Why did the brother in law not put a bullet or two in him?

I don't know because I wasn't there, but my suspicion is that the ranchers did not wish to kill a human while the outlaw had no problem doing that.
The ranchers were there to hunt and kill deer.
The outlaw was going to kill anyone who got in his way.

I would not want to take a human life either. But if I read a situation to be either me or him, in time to act, I would like to think the suspect would be a dead suspect. I have a very strong will to live.

Also says the brother-in-law drove to confront the person. If you saw him shoot your brother-in-law why would you drive over and confront him? Shoot him from where you were, or if you don't think you could do that. Then just let him leave and go get your buddy.

Sounds like this guy needs to go and meet his maker, PDQ.

Must have been a city "gentleman" rancher. I don't know a single rancher out West who's BIL would not have had a constant bead on this trespasser while the trespasser was being confronted.

Many years ago I drove up to my ranch to fund my locked gate open, the lock nowhere around, and a truck I did not recognize parked in front of my house. I kept the family in my truck, and got out and loaded my AK. I circled the house, but found nobody.

I then began a wider view search, and saw two men at my pond fishing. I made my way down quietly, and ultimately discovered it was a life-long buddy and his friend. It was a tense few moments, and I'm quite confident that my friend's friend had to change his shorts.

To me, encountering someone in the woods is far more spooky than populated places.

It's why I'm n.e.v.e.r. without a sidearm at my place....and as another poster noted, I will do my best to keep said trespassers down-muzzle until the situation is resolved.

Security can be difficult on a large, modern, Texas ranch.

On any given day one might see oil and gas pumpers, 18-wheel water trucks, wind turbine employees, paid hunters, grass lessee rancher, poachers, trespassers, and who knows what else.

When I am out and about on my ranch I always carry my shotgun (never know when you might come across a rattlesnake), semi-automatic rifle (AR-15, AK-47, or Ruger Ranch Rifle), and my Glock 26.

This suspect looked totally "whacked out" shooting folks, driving through locked gates, etc. My guess is that he was "hepped up" on drugs, as we say in Texas.

Hope this suspect, if found guilty, gets the max.

When I was in high school we hunted on a very remote 2400 acre lease in the Hill Country. One day when I was about 16, after wandering the lease I came back to camp to find my father cooking a meal for some guys who were apparently illegal aliens. I realized that should they attack either one of us I was at a distinct disadvantage with my bolt action 30-06, so I stood off far enough to get off several shots if they tried to rush me. As it turned out it wasn't a problem...they were just three hungry guys and probably decent people hoping to find work in America. However, it was a wake up call, and from then on I always carried a handgun when we were on the lease. On my property now I always have at least a handgun.
