Okay, not exactly a Mak...
It looks like I will be making a deal rather soon for an FEG PA-63 chambered in 9mm Makarov. It has variously been described as a cross between a Walther PPK and a Makarov.
My question to you ladies and gents that may own, and especially those who carry, a Mak is where do you get your ammo for your Mak? I don't want to do mail-/internet- order for ammo at this time. I want to find a place I can walk into with cash and walk out with some 9mm Mak ammo. BTW, I live about an hour north of Houston.
I know Shooter's Station in Conroe stocks Hornady 9mm Mak ammo, but where can I find ammo with which to practice? Also what do any of you think about the Hornady round for SD ammo?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Gun shows, friend.
Maybe someone there in your area can advise as to a local place or two that stocks the 9X18 (at a decent price). I live only about 30 minutes from Cheaper Than Dirt showroom in FW. Sometimes they have what I want in stock, sometimes they don't. With what's happened with ammo supply and pricing in the last year or two, you may find yourself using internet vendors whether desired or not.
FWIW, the Silver Bear and Brown Bear stuff through CTD has run well through my Maks (which I don't shoot much anymore), but they use some type of varnish for waterprroofing and you may need to pay extra attention to cleaning chamber.

I have this same gun. It's my backup and main carry when I can't wear a larger gun. Hornady XTP is the best ammo available for carrying in these guns, IMO. Georgia Arms makes Gold Dot ammo for it, but you'd have to order it online. Don't get Silver Bear hollow points. The wide profile of the point causes them to jam in this gun.
Where are you located? I've bought Silver Bear from a place in Brenham called
Ammunition To Go. Their prices are good, and they're good guys to deal with. They mainly do internet orders, but are just fine with you coming and buying in person. Cabela's also carries S&B and Wolf Ammo in this caliber. It's usually available in small gun shops as well. If you get Wolf, be sure to get the 95 grain stuff. The gun is not meant to fire anything heavier. I accidentally shot some 100 grain out of mine once, and it was painful.
As far as the gun is concerned, it's a Walther PPK clone. All of the design is modeled after the PPK. In fact, many parts are interchangeable. The only real similarity to the Makarov pistols is that it is a DA/SA blowback design and the caliber it uses. The internals are quite different.

I thought I remembered someone on this forum having a PA-63. Thanks for the info guys. I guess I may have jumped the gun, as it looks like the deal I was pursuing on a PA-63 has probably fallen through. I'll still keep my eyes and ears open for one, though.

How good of a deal was it? They're readily available from Aim Surplus with 2 mags for $129.95.

J&G Sales also carries extra mags for $14.95/ea

These are the same places I got my pistol and mags.

Centerfire Systems also has them cheap, as well as CDNN in Abilene.
Plenty of PA63s around.
I haven't had any problem find ing 9x18 ammo.

I've bought some Barnaul practice ammo at gunshows and Fountain Firearms in Houston usually has some available. No bargains but no ripoffs either.
