PLANTATION -- One gunman is dead and another is in critical condition after they tried to rob a sandwich store and were shot by an armed customer Wednesday night, authorities said.

Two armed, masked men entered a Subway restaurant at 1949 N. Pine Island Rd. and demanded money at about 11:17 p.m., said Detective Robert Rettig, a police spokesman.

They then attempted to rob the lone customer by forcing him into the restroom but the customer, who was legally armed, pulled his gun and fired.

One of the suspects was struck in the chest and the other was struck in the head and chest, Rettig said.

When police arrived, they found one of the suspects unconscious in the store.

The police's K9 unit found the second suspect later hiding in a hedge in front of a nearby bank at the Jacaranda Square shopping center, officials said.

The men were taken to the hospital. The suspect who was shot in the head and chest died. The second suspect was in critical but stable condition, investigators said.

Police said the customer appeared to have shot in self-defense.

"...as opposed to the idea that the customer was an opportunistic son of a bisquit eater?"

Charges are pending against the surviving suspect, Rettig said. No identifies have been released.

The shopping center remained closed Thursday morning as police hunted for a gun carried by the robbery suspects.

Headline should actually read:

"Customer with gun "fatally stops" one armed robber, seriously wounds the "other" robber at a Subway restaurant."

Hey, was this on Turkey Breast day, or Meatball Marinara???

At least they didn't use the word victim.

That was some gifted or lucky shooting against two armed assailants.

Good shoot!

Sounds like surprise, speed, and good shooting won the day.

from the sound of things the customer didnt get involved until he was directly threatened. good strategy

and sounds like some darn fine marksmanship.

The story has been updated. The defender's name is John Lovell and his age is given as 71. Sheesh.

If he IS a member here (I suppose a Floridian can log in . . .) or on any other forum, he'd probably be wise not to post anything about it.

I'm glad he's okay. It sounds like he isn't going to have any legal harrassment out of this.

I wonder what kind of Psychological damage one would sustain after having to defend oneself with deadly force, it's hard enough on a police officer and they have professional training, I can't imagine what it'd be like for a civilian.....

I'm glad only the bad guys got hurt.

I think it's different for every individual. The guy may well be a combat veteran or retired cop.

As to why one shouldn't talk about such an incident, if the DA is a jerk, it's possible for him to make a statement look incriminating. It's also possible for the criminals' relatives or friends to misuse statements.

If I am ever involved in a self-defense incident that requires more action than yelling or running, I am not going to talk about it except to my lawyer.
