Texas' Open Carry Concerns

I just got back from a week in Tennessee, where concealed carry and open carry are both allowed by law if you are licensed.

I went in a lot of stores and restaurants (100+) during my visit, and didn't see ONE "no guns allowed" sign. Even at a Jared's I walked past. Not ONE!

Why is everybody so alarmed here? I just don't understand......

It's the fear of the unknown.

Tennessee doesn't have "OCT"!

I'm not sure if the OCT was a joke or not but I found this.
Tennessee is not a traditional open carry state. However, Tennessee is a shall-issue state that issues a carry permit that allows both open and concealed carry.

I did not take the statement as a joke, but OCT is a joke. They, in my opinion, were the greatest impediment to progress to the restoration of gun rights in the last legislative session. More so than any anti gun group. Their antics are ill advised and I'll go so far to say down right stupid. I hope, but doubt, their leadership will get a clue and tone it down. Since apparently some of then can't OC under existing (January 1) law, I doubt that will happen.

Hey Chucky

in those hundred of places you went HOW MANY DID YOU SEE O C?

In many of the classes I have held for winter Texans I let them know if they have open carry in the state they live in.

There are approximatley 30

asking them if they have ever seen open carry and the response is normally about 10% said yes..

How many did you see while in Tennessee?

I saw none....but my point is that ZERO places we visited had "no gun" signs. Yet, here we are in Texas with multiple places posting .07. Tennessee proves they're not needed (in my mind) as do many other states.

Peace.

That mirrors my experiences while carrying openly in AZ, CO, NM, and OK. Obviously, my personal observation in even the more populated cities is not statically significant. What is significant is that I saw only one "no guns" sign during 10 days in Tucson, AZ, and none anywhere else. Nor did we experience any incidents with the natives. I even spoke with the manager of a What-a-Burger were we ate.

The bottom line is that I had hoped that my fellow Texas would handle open carry as well as the Okies have. I am disappointed, but still have hope for improvement.

And I was in TN in Oct and did not see a single OC. What I did see were three separate places that I had to go back to the car and disarm or leave. One a super large mall, one a major restaurant and the other a small business (RC models and radios). So?

Businesses are apprehensive about open carry in Texas because of OCT, OCTC, CATI, etc. The stunts they pulled in advance of and during the legislative session was a PR nightmare for gun rights. Add in a complicit media that was all too happy to show hours of video of "all of those yahoo gun nuts", and you have business owners and trade groups aggressively researching what to do to keep "them" out. To the uninitiated, the above named groups are the only gun owners they've been aware of seeing. And that ain't a pretty picture.

I'm not an OCT person but from the video's I have seen they didn't do anything legally wrong. It is hard to preach for open carry hand gun laws and then condemn folks that are walking around in stores on the streets with open carried rifles. It may have freaked some folks out, but if they can legally do it, why condemn them? It may not be what YOU would do, and you may think they are hurting the prospects of our rights, but they are exercising their right, so what's the problem?
