What to do with the old card

I asked this in the waiting room but never got an answer. My first renewal came through not long ago and today I finally got to make a run back to Houston to get ahold of it. In addition to the new expiration date of 2012 it shows the real me, four years older and greyer and 40 pounds lighter than on the original. A noticable amount of that 40 pounds was on my face so now the picture, goofy as it is, looks like me.

I seem to recall something about what I'm supposed to do with the old card and it not being legal to have two valid cards. Can I just stuff it in the safe or am I supposed to destroy or return it?

You are correct in that you cannot have 2 valid cards. The old one is not valid if it is out of date. Throw it away. Keep it & put it in a shdow box on the wall or in the safe or anything in between.

Most shredders can also accommodate this if you aren't into keepsakes.

I take a single hole punch maker and put a hole through some part of the license and stow it in the gunsafe for future posterity...

I believe the only time you are supposed to return the old one is if you have an address change. Once you get the updated one, you mail back the old one.

You have to surrender your old license if you initially had an "NSA" (revolver) license and qualify for an SA (semi-auto) license (see GC §411.184).

You also have to surrender the license if it is suspended or revoked.

I think those are the only occasions.
