Man in trouble for taking loaded gun to school and using it as a hammer

A man from Sikeston, Missouri, who was volunteering at a school event allegedly used a handgun as a hammer on Monday. Jeffrey Kyle Grubbs, 45, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and child endangerment, both felonies. He was arrested on Tuesday and released on a criminal summons. Grubbs was volunteering at Kelly Elementary School in Benton, Missouri.
He had taken his handgun with him, according to a probable-cause statement by detective Darrin Sides of the Scott County Sheriff’s Department. Grubbs has a concealed-carry permit, according to the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, but it is illegal to take a gun onto school property without consent from a school official.

But...he was using as a hammer, so it was no longer a gun at that point, it was a hammer, yes?...or can we now go back to sholdering those arm braces?

It didn't mention whether or not he ever graduated elementary school. Maybe he should have been a student instead of a volunteer.

I'd say using a loaded gun as a hammer may be the least of his problems; however, they did it in the cowboy movies all the time.

He may end up getting one of the charges dropped. Ulawful Use of a Weapon states:
Unlawful use of weapons--exceptions--penalties.
571.030. 1. A person commits the crime of unlawful use of weapons if he or she knowingly:
(1) Carries concealed upon or about his or her person a knife, a firearm, a blackjack or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use; or
(2) Sets a spring gun; or
(3) Discharges or shoots a firearm into a dwelling house, a railroad train, boat, aircraft, or motor vehicle as defined in section 302.010, or any building or structure used for the assembling of people; or
(4) Exhibits, in the presence of one or more persons, any weapon readily capable of lethal use in an angry or threatening manner; or
(5) Has a firearm or projectile weapon readily capable of lethal use on his or her person, while he or she is intoxicated, and handles or otherwise uses such firearm or projectile weapon in either a negligent or unlawful manner or discharges such firearm or projectile weapon unless acting in self-defense; or
(6) Discharges a firearm within one hundred yards of any occupied schoolhouse, courthouse, or church building; or
(7) Discharges or shoots a firearm at a mark, at any object, or at random, on, along or across a public highway or discharges or shoots a firearm into any outbuilding; or
(8) Carries a firearm or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use into any church or place where people have assembled for worship, or into any election precinct on any election day, or into any building owned or occupied by any agency of the federal government, state government, or political subdivision thereof; or
(9) Discharges or shoots a firearm at or from a motor vehicle, as defined in section 301.010, discharges or shoots a firearm at any person, or at any other motor vehicle, or at any building or habitable structure, unless the person was lawfully acting in self-defense; or
(10) Carries a firearm, whether loaded or unloaded, or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use into any school, onto any school bus, or onto the premises of any function or activity sponsored or sanctioned by school officials or the district school board; or
**(11) Possesses a firearm while also knowingly in possession of a controlled substance that is sufficient for a felony violation of section 195.202.
However, this section says:
4. Subdivisions (1), (8), and (10) of subsection 1 of this section shall not apply to any person who has a valid concealed carry permit issued pursuant to sections 571.101 to 571.121, a valid concealed carry endorsement issued before August 28, 2013, or a valid permit or endorsement to carry concealed firearms issued by another state or political subdivision of another state.
So, unless they try to say he violated subdivision 4 and displayed it in a threatening manner, the carry on school grounds would not apply. Even in the prohibited places section, carrying into a school is not a criminal act unless the person refuses to leave when asked.
Now, the child endangerment charge may stick.
IMO the guy's an idiot and shouldn't have a CCP, but he he may only end up with the one charge.
This will be an interesting one to follow and see what the prosecutor does.

The only thing I can think is using the bottom of the magazine. I cringe at the thought of using the slide as a hammer.
But the actual answer is that no part of the gun is suitable as a hammer unless you're out of ammo and need to defend yourself.

I think it depends on whether you are using regular framing nails or finish nails.
The tricky part is using it as a screwdriver.

During the interview at the Sheriff's Office, Grubbs admitted to bringing the gun, while loaded, onto school grounds, and that while attempting to drive a thumbtack into a wooden plaque, he pulled the gun out and used the butt as a hammer.
He says that after hammering the thumbtack a handful of times, he felt compelled to unload the gun.
That's when he unloaded the magazine, put the bullets in his pocket, and continued using the gun as a hammer.
