I just got a packet from the DPS saying that I had an error when filling out the Residence Addresses for Preceding Five Years form of my CHL application. I had left out the time that I lived at home over summer during college, so they sent me that one page of the application back, and I feel like a bonehead.

Now, the letter they sent along with this form says that I need to send back the letter and "written proof of compliance or other relevant information from the appropriate authority", does that just mean fill out the form correctly and send it back, or do I need anything else?

Maybe you need a note from your parents...

Do you mean that you left "holes" in your list of residences?

What was the address on your driver license during these periods?

I don't know any answers; I'm just trying to understand what the problem was.

Yes, I left holes in my list of residences. Specifically, I left out the period during which I lived at home during the summer of 2005, when I wasn't in school.

My (family) home address is and always was the address on my DL, but the instructor at my CHL course said to list where you lived during school as well, and I just didn't list living at home that summer.

Well, I would suggest calling them and asking them exactly what they want you to do. The form letters that they send are pretty incomprehensible.

You may just have to add a complete list of addresses and dates.

I feel for you. I know that, had I applied for a CHL within five years of graduating college, DPS may have received a novel.

I know people don't care, but just to add to common knowledge, I just got an email back from the DPS and they said just fill out the sheet correctly and send it back with the letter.

We do care.

The only way we know how these exceptions are handled is by people telling us.

If there is any documentation of that time, such as a W-2 form, apartment lease, or vehicle insurance, yes.

I don't know where the line is drawn for lengthy work assignments, vacations, working in the circus, etc.

Maybe one of the instructors will have a more precise answer.

If you never changed the address on your driver's license, and if you were able to receive mail at your permanent residence (i.e., your parents' home), then you do NOT have to list it.

DPS is only concerned with changes to your permanent residence address.

I specifically asked, at instructor renewal, "if my son spent 6 years at college and lived in 12 different apartments during that time, what does he put on his application?"

And Marion said, "if you received mail for him at your house, then he never changed his permanent residence and he does not have to list those addresses on his application".

Concur. My wife and I spent three months (three....looooooong....months) with my mother-in-law before moving to Texas. During the first two months, we just had our mail forwarded to her home. During the last month, we changed the forwarding to our new address and then filled out the change of address cards. We never changed our DLs over since it was temporary.

On my CHL app, I only listed that last address that we resided at and that was printed on our DLs. The date range I used was from the time we lived there up until the day we started living at our new residence. Didn't cause any blips or anything during processing.

does the dps ck your w2 forms and such, or can you just list the last two driver lic addresses if they cover the last 5-8 yrs. even if you did live in other places?

No one outside DPS seems to know what they check.

W-2 forms are supposed to be used only for income-tax purposes.

I suspect it's more likely DPS checks commercial databases. If you had a credit card, utilities, or car insurance at another address, that might show up.
