It would be a bad idea to break my door in.

I'm torn here. Part of me feels sorry for the homeowner and the other part doesn't. Why would anyone rely on someone else to protect them. The 911 mentality at its finest.

Other than if they were a convicted felon what other reasons would there be for not being allowed to own a gun? Don't mean to sound callous. If they were not allowed to own a gun then they have my sympathies.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant.

My point was in this day and age.with things.the way they are your crazy to not have some sort of firearm in your home. If you don't want to cc or have one in your vehicle that's one thing but to rely on someone else for your safety is unrealistic. No one is responsible for your safety but you.

There are a number of other reasons why someone may not be able to legally own a gun in Texas.

And there are a number of reasons why, even if you could own a firearm, and did own a firearm, you might not have it right there at your side when the attack occurs. In the rush of the attack, you may not be able to get to it, and you'd likely be in the same situation as this poor guy.

That doesn't happen in my house, as I carry at home as well, but I recognize that not everyone does. So the 'wisdom of not having a gun and running for help' could just as easily be the 'bad luck of not having it right there by your side the very second you need it to be there and running for help'.

Either way, a very sad story.

Yep. Or maybe he knew his own mental limitations and decided not to get a gun. I know a girl who's not sure she's stable enough to own a gun, and I'm not sure I disagree. Does that mean that if someone breaks into her apt, she deserves what she gets?

I much prefer stories where the homeowner prevails and repels the assault/invasion. Fleeing in terror from one's domicile is not a course of action anyone should have to resort to, but many folks seem content with that as their only option, trusting that 9-1-1 will protect them. Whether armed with a sidearm as usual or not, my intent would be to resist the invaders first before considering withdrawal.

A firearm is only one of a number of options for defense of the home. It just happens to be the easiest and likely most effective option. Something as simple as a knife or a spear can get the job done if necessary. I think even felons can own a black powder revolver, but I am not sure if there are specific restrictions on that. Another discussion is hardening the home to make break-ins more difficult. Running to the neighbor's house is way down on the list of options IMO, but I guess every situation is different. Just about all options require prior preparation and thought.
