The good:
The victim reported he tried to run back into his apartment, but was grabbed by one of the suspects. The victim, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, was carrying a handgun at the time.
The bad!:
Authorities said the man had a concealed handgun license. He was not injured during the confrontation.
Investigators do not believe it was a random crime. They believe the resident was targeted for marijuana he had in his apartment.
This may not look good. If this is proves to be true this may be another statistic for a CHL being revoked. What appears to have been a good shoot may not come out very rosy.

They added that little bit about the dope, into the article after I posted it...
I would have noticed that when I posted it the first time...
I agree this is a turn for the worst...And that I bet they couldn't wait for something like this to creep into the story...
Because it does support the perception that I must be a doper...
Ya'll do know I'm kidding, right???

Police say man foils robbery by shooting attacker

A northwest Harris County man foiled an attempted robbery early this morning when he shot and killed one of two men who confronted him as he was walking to his car, sheriff's deputies said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m., while it was still dark, outside the man's residence at the Jones Crossing Apartments in the 9000 block of Jones Road at Steeple Drive.
No charges have been filed against the shooter.
"It appears to be self-defense," said Harris County Sheriff's Department Lt. John Denholm, who was at the scene.
The shooter told police he left his home and was walking toward his car to go to work when the two suspects confronted him. There was a struggle before the man took out a concealed hand gun.
The man has no criminal record, but deputies found narcotics in his apartment and charges are pending, Denholm said.
Deputies have not verified whether the shooter had a concealed hand gun license for his weapon.
The robbery suspect he killed was wearing a stocking over his head and black clothing. His identity has not been released.
The second suspect, who was also wearing all black and some sort of head covering, fled the scene and was still on the run at 2 p.m.
The shooter was not injured during the confrontation.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.

Drug dealers illegally carrying guns... it figures.
But even still, it sounds like a good shoot.

If the shooting happened outside the building, how/why did the police search his apartment?

Very interesting point. Not that it mattered because he shouldn't be having such item(s) in his home anyway.

I was wondering that myself...
He certainly didn't hide the "narcotics" very well if they (PD) found them...
But since we do not know why the investigation went into the home, and why there was a reason for the investigators to be "snooping" around the apartment...
I can only summize that the shooter had something "flag" on his record, and that possibly "like someone else said here", that he may have not had a CHL...
This just looks like another poorly reported story that catches you up with the apparent hope that this was a CHL'er who sucessfully defended themselves...
Only to find out that there is a lot more that needs to be known, but the reporting, and releasing of data from the investigation is being tight lipped...
But the media's job is done in any event...
Vaguely report a shooting where it could be mis-construed as a CHL'er defending themselves...
And that there are narcotics involved which makes "alleged" CHL'er out to be not very well backgrounded or investigated...Makes the system look bad...
Make sure the investigators don't clarify anything to the media...
The result is negative for CHL'ers either way it is received by the public...
But thats just my opinion...

(TX) Concealed Handgun Licensee Kills Would Be Robber 10/09/05
A northwest Harris County resident fights back, killing a man who he said attempted to rob him as he left for work Monday morning, KPRC Local 2 reported.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/kprc/20051010/lo_kprc/2987005
The shooting happened at the Jones Crossing Apartments in the 9000 block of Jones Road at Steeple Park Drive shortly after 5:30 a.m.
"The complainant was walking out to his car to go to work this morning when the two suspects confronted him. There was a struggle. The complainant had a pistol. He pulled that pistol out and shot one of the suspects," Harris County Sheriff's Department Lt. John Denholm said.
Authorities said the man had a concealed handgun license. He was not injured during the confrontation.
Investigators do not believe it was a random crime. They believe the resident was targeted for marijuana he had in his apartment.
Deputies said the suspect who was shot and killed was wearing all-black clothing and a ski mask. His identity has not been released.
Authorities said a second person involved in the attempted robbery fled the scene on foot but they believe they know how to find him.
The Harris County District Attorney's office will review the case. Drug charges are pending against the shooter. If convicted, he would lose his license to carry a concealed handgun.
