Pastor robbed and beaten to death outside his church. Fort Dodge, Iowa.


I remember when churches were left unlocked 24/7 so people could come in at any time and pray.

As Counsel President of Saint John Lutheran church in Frisco, our hearts and minds go out to his family, his congregation and all of those who loved and will miss him.... I have sent this article to our counsel and Pastor.... Several pastors in the North Texas area met for a study group this morning and were informed of this terrible tragedy.... Prayers of course has been sent and hopefully offers of support throughout the Lutheran community....

In 1985, after a church meeting, my pastor was beaten in the head with a pipe in the church parking lot, taken to a cotton field, raped and her body abandoned. I was the last church member to leave that night, she wouldn’t leave when I did. Her murderer was most likely hiding in the bushes already when I walked out. I am haunted by the murder of such a dear friend of our family.
The murderer still sits on death row in Angola prison in Louisiana.

Prayers for the pastor’s family and his church family.

Criminal violence happens everywhere and social decay has eliminated shame as a guiding force even for violent criminals. Sadly, this means that Churches (often true sanctuaries in the past with their door always open) now have to implement real security measures for premises and staff.

As to the headline of this post, even within Houston or the greater-Houston area there are places where criminal violence is a far higher risk than other places. That certainly holds true elsewhere as well, and while violence against clergy is most certainly worse in some measures than violence against other folks, violence against clergy isn't something noted as increasing in frequency or at a higher rate than the overall population.
