My parents read that book to me when I was 2 and 3. I just loved it. Wish I still had the book but it literally fell apart from being read or looked at so much.

It says here that Sambo was from Southern India. That would make sense since there were tigers.

I remember that book as well. We had a Sambo's in Plano back when I was a teen. It was like a Dennys but the food was edible. It disappeared around 42 years ago. I just figured they were gone or had changed the name. Back then I just assumed a black dude owned it.

I remember the restaurant chain well. It was really the only place I ever heard or saw the story of Sambo. I did not think anything of the story when I was young, though looking back, I am amazed they got away with the resturant name and theme for as long as they did.

In 1978, I was getting out of the Army the first time and my wife was pregnant with my first son. My wife flew to Philadelphia while I was packing up a truck at Ft. Leavenworth with my stuff. My squad took me out to breakfast at the Sambo's in town and decided to buy my unborn son a gift. They bought him a 36 inch tall stuffed tiger that was one of the trademarks of the restaurant. After he was born, he slept with that tiger for a long time. I would not be surprised if my wife still has it in boxes in storage somewhere.

The town where I grew up had a Sambo's restaurant. They had pictures from the story surrounding the upper walls of the dining area.
