Law enforcement descended on Mayfair mall in Wauwatosa Friday afternoon as reports of an active shooter sent shoppers and employees running for cover.

At least eight people were injured and taken to Froedtert Hospital, according to a police officer stationed outside the hospital.

In the latest update, the department provided its first explanation of what may have prompted the shooting.

"Preliminary investigation has led us to believe that this shooting was not a random act, and was the result of an altercation," police said.

Mayfair [Mall] has a strict no-gun policy, [Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis] McBride shared and said, “guns have no place in shopping malls or other places in which crowds of people gather… If the shooter had complied with that policy, no one would have been hurt yesterday.”
