I had another idea about "desensitizing" the locals to open carry.

I'm thinking of finding others that want to open carry and getting a restaurant to approve of a few of us having lunch there once a week. Maybe more than one. This way non carriers would see citizens carrying and not being a threat.

i am normally VERY anti "CHL Badge". We've all seen them offered on the internet.

For me...the smart thing to do is be polite, always present your CHL when asked for ID and in fact quickly inform any LEO you are carrying. Even when not asked for ID.

If asked for ID or CHL when OCing do so and be respectful.
If asked why you are OCing respectfully explain to the officer that ...

He wants a CHL but is not sure he can get one.
All charges were dismissed but he did do the ride and overnight stay.

Q2: He was told that his firearms may be confiscated even though charges were dismissed.

Went out Saturday to my first IDPA match.

But from the generality of your needs I would recommend a more standard AR 15.
