The first thing I noticed back when I moved to Dallas, although it could just be a Texas thing, is that you don't need to use the on and off ramps to get on and off expressways. Just get a truck, find a relatively level spot, and cross the the grass between the express way and the service roads. One caution, this doesn't work well on the toll roads.
