OWB Retention Holster (that doesn't involve the thumb)

#1

Post by Vol Texan »

For the times that I may want to open carry, I'd like to use a retention holster. But my challenge is that I cannot use one that has a thumb-activated release mechanism. I have nerve damage in my neck that causes me to have little to no feeling in my right thumb, so I wouldn't be able to tell if I'm on the mechanism or not...and I wouldn't be able to tell if I'd activated it or not. In the rare instance that I do need to draw, I'd like to avoid these obstacles, if possible.

So I'm looking for a bit of help from the more experienced folks here...does anyone know of a retention holster that would fit this bill? I don't care if it's finger-activated, or if it takes a special twisting or drawing motion to release the gun, or anything else...as long as it doesn't involve the thumb.

Kydex is OK, of course, but I'd be interested in finding out if there is a leather option as well.
Your best option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
When those fail, aim for center mass.

Blackhawk SERPA. I used it for competition too.
Grab-Twist-pull based holsters such as Uncle-Mikes-Tactical-Reflex-Holster
Caution: No experience with Uncle Mikes holster.

A Couple of these below, by adding a light jacket/coat etc could be concealed carry too/or open carry

i think these use a finger instead of thumb FingerLok™ retention

I've been considering them, the nylon one with belt snaps on belt holster for switching from concealed to open if a place only allows open but not concealed

Considering the HB 910 / Open carry "Language" "Shoulder or BELT holster" ... I'm going with Belt holsters instead of "Paddle" holsters for Open Carry if I need to Open carry ;)
I suppose with lightweight gun, a Paddle holster could be worn without a belt

Using second finger (instead of thumb or trigger finger) retention release (on holsters in above post) isn't really a "new" idea. Hammerless revolvers straps can use that finger
But you'll need to practice... I have not tried these yet (I'm in a small town) but they might be used with thumb too if one wanted to, but was my impression all these are second finger releases

I bought a Safari land GLS™ (Grip Lock System) holster for retention carry. I like it but it is a bit slower and I need to remember to hit the release with my firing hand middle finger. Another words, just like anything else, it will require more training (dry practice).
