Initial story is homeowner in Columbus Indiana confronts bat-wielding intruder at 1 AM, shoots and kills him.
About 20 miles from where I grew up. Columbus is the home of Cummins diesel.

The intruder, Derek Henderson, was an Air Force veteran who had served in Afghanistan and was in treatment for mental health issues. His family has said he was in one Humvee when he witnessed an IED destroy another Humvee with his friends in it.
On 02 Jan 20 Henderson had an appointment with a therapist at Camp Atterbury (long time military facility north of Columbus) that "didn't go well." On 03 Jan 20 contacted his wife for permission to get an emergency detention order -- she apparently had powers of attorney for his medical care. The VA obtained an emergency detention order, signed by a judge in the local (Bartholomew) county, and the order made its way to the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office, possibly by way of the Columbus PD (Columbus is in Bartholomew County, Indiana).
Three deputies, one lieutenant and two sergeants, visited Henderson late on the morning of 03 Jan 20 but did not reach him. They returned in the afternoon and spoke to Henderson on his front porch. Henderson was alone, his wife and daughter having moved out of the house a few days earlier. In his conversation with the deputies, recorded on a doorbell video, he became agitated and then calm, but refused to leave or allow deputies in the house. The deputies left without him and did not make any further contact.
Just after midnight on 04 Jan the video doorbell recorded him leaving the house with a baseball bat. A number of vehicle windows were broken that night along the street he lived on - no one saw him do it, but seems likely. In any case he eventually confronted another homeowner on the same street, who apparently came outside to (my speculation) see what the noise was. The homeowner went back into his house and Henderson followed with the bat. The homeowner shot him in the head, chest, and abdomen. Henderson was pronounced dead at the Columbus Regional Hospital ER.
The sheriff suspended the three deputies for 15 days without pay, demoted the lieutenant to sergeant and the sergeants to patrolmen, for failure to properly serve the emergency detention order.
