In your opinion

My way of thinking is this:

The post started with the premise of "what is the best gun" type question.

Ferrari type handguns can be great. Bells and whistles can be great. But one needs to decide for themselves WHAT is the reason you are getting the gun. If it is one for the collection, then that will take you in one direction. If it is function, then that might take you in a whole different direction.

For me, the handgun is a tool. Not that I don't like a pretty tool, but first and formost, it must work 100% of the time. It must be a tool that I can use better than other tools of it's kind. It must be a tool that I will not even hesitate scratching, denting, etc IF I have to reload it in a one handed fashion that is emergency in nature or throw it down if I have to go to a BUG, etc.

AND there can be similar but different tools that I might use, depending on the situation/conditions.

That said: I have a beat-up but flawless functioning old J-frame. I have a couple of Glocks, I have a worn but wonderful old Dan Wesson 6-shot revolver, and of course a 1911.

For me, my Ferrari would be an expensive IPSC Racegun with all the bells and whistles. Not worth a _______ in my day to day life, but one hell of a ride when I could take it out and put it through it's paces at the racetrack <g>

+1 on the Colt Python.

I agree with FightinAggieCHL on this one. IMO it is the best shooting "straight out of the box" factory handgun around. Both SA and DA trigger pull and is superb. They point well and are extremely accurate ... and they also look cool! It is a crying shame that they are no longer in production.

I don't own any "Ferrari" handguns. The closest thing I've got would be a S&W 27-2 that has the slickest trigger I've ever felt (including a few Colts

). With the grips it's wearing, I'd class it as closer to a 'Vette - slick, powerful, but not as comfortable as it could be. :-p

Best handgun, though? That would be the Chevy small-block of the pistol world, the 1911. You can turn one into a racing machine or a work-horse. I have no race-guns, just a few work-horses. Favorite one is a Springfield Champion GI, lightly customized. I'd compare it to a good pick-up truck.

I'd love to get a commander-length bobtail, though. I've drooled over a few Nighthawks, but I'm not likely to get one soon.

Nice metaphor on the SBC. I would actually consider a 1911 in .45ACP to be a big block - rat motor.

Guns are like cars, everybody has their own opinion.

I like my Sig 210 for an out of the box superdooper gun. There are also lots of others that fit this bill for me, but this is the best of the best.

Since platform wasnt clarified I will assume factory guns. I carry a Kimber UC majority of the time. The FPB comes out in about 10 minutes with a sight pusher. I dont consider it my best factory gun though. I have an HK USP Expert in .45 that I would put leagues ahead in capacity, quality and accuracy. I have couple dozen handguns from .22, 9mm, .45 and .50 and would definitely put the HK on top overall. But it is too big for ccw.

If we are talking just 1911 then I prefer my Springfields in both full and Champ size. But the little Kimber wins in concealability, with capacity and accuracy as well. I dont think you can have 1 "best" gun.

Has anyone here shot an FN Five-seveN? It looks like it's an awesome little gun. I'm really thinking about my next firearm that I would like to buy, and my mind has taken a liking to it. I know it isn't legal for IDPA matches, so that is going to weigh in a huge factor in my decision, but I was just looking for opinions.

Another one of my favorite makers of handguns is the SigSauer company. Not quite the Ferrari, but it is accurately described as the "Cadillac of Firearms."

I have and it has almost no recoil and 20 rds capacity. But it is too big to me to conceal as it is real wide in the body. We penetrated a 4x4 post with a round so it is pretty hot to shoot.
