At age 7 you have 40% more life experience than you do at age 5.

I started my 3 children shooting at age 7, I really don't think they were ready for it before then.
it's socially unacceptable to be ahead of your time.

That's my last post on this topic. I don't see how openly advocating breaking the law is going to help anyone.
While I agree intentionally breaking the law with your children is a very bad idea, but laws prohibiting shooting within city limits are city ordinances, city ordinances can only be Class C misdemeanors. So how does this put ones CHL at risk forever?

mr.72 wrote: Also it is pretty high risk for a CHL holder to allow a child to shoot a "technically illegal" rifle in their back yard. If you get called on this, you will probably lose your CHL. Is that worth the risk?
Can you clarify what you mean by this? In city limits perhaps?

I live in a rural area, and most people I know regularly fire rifles in their back yards and allow their children to do the same with adult supervision of course.

My kids have been through a few different kinds and this is their favorite. Red Ryder styled but sturdier, far more accurate and an easy to use peep sight. Good for can-plinking beginners and accomplished rifle users. 4H uses these in 5m competitions, they'll put BBs through one hole all day if you're up to it.

Enjoy!

Don't most people in Texas live in some city's city limits?

I disagree. All my experience with children is that they listen really well at 3-5, and things go downhill after that.

I started my youngest with a Crickett at age 3. Before we bought the rifle, he was known to walk up to strangers in stores and recite the gun safety rules I'd made him memorize: "Never point guns at people or pets. Always keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot the target. Never touch a gun without Mommy or Daddy. Guns can be very dangerous."

I also open carry when I'm in the house or yard, so guns have no mystique to him; they're just ordinary things.

Now that the's about to turn 6, he's got the full-on "six year old sillies" that make boys his age so much fun, but also frustrating.

not all cities have the same ordinances.

That's right, and some don't even allow you to shoot air guns or BB guns.

I'm sure there is the rare exception, but five doesn't have the attention span required and they may get turned off to shooting by the inflexibility of basic gun safety.

Also, I'd start them with iron sights to teach basic marksmanship before moving to a scope.

It sounds like in the case that the gift is something that Dad wants more than daughter.
There may be some merit to the idea that 5 year olds don't have enough focus to handle even an airgun safely. I bought my daughters (6 and 8 at the time) a pair of airsoft berettas from bass pro for $20 with a target. I used it as a platform to teach them the 4 rules and some basic marksmanship concepts. The youngest one still muzzle swept me frequently in the first few back porch sessions. We haven't pulled them out in a while, but I'd be willing to bet that since it's been a few months she would be back to her poor muzzle control from lack of practice. It takes a lot of focus for even an adult to keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times so I will probably wait until she's 7 before picking up a bb gun. FWIW, the older daughter is much better about keeping the muzzle pointed in the safe direction and enjoys correcting her little sister when she has a lapse. ;-)

Airsoft guns have worked well for me. Teaching my 13 and 15 yr daughters last yr in handguns. Got an airsoft G27 with blowback (it's same size and weight as G27 uses greengas) and they loved it. Moved them up to the buckmark .22 in the same wk. This yr moving them up to 9mm...

I'm focusing on handguns because I carry 24/7 and they know all of the safe principles but want them to know how to use it in an emergency...
