Hollow points are the most effective at "stopping the threat". Also they are less likely to over penetrate, making them more suited for self-defense. Either way, I don't see this as a problem in Texas.

If it were suggested in court that carrying hollowpoints was looking for trouble, I would ask the lawyer if he felt the bailiff was looking for trouble.

That's a good one! If you asked it in court, you would probably be cited for contempt. :smilelol5:

The judge would have to stop laughing before could cite me.

When I took the course, for some odd reason the instructor told us to NOT carry hollow points, because of how it would look in court. Then a few minutes later starting talking that if court and asked why you killed the guy instead of shooting him in the leg, he told us to say " because we are taught to stop the threat "..

I started to debated the whole hollow point thing with him, bringing up that ball ammo for personal protection is a :nono: The guy didnt want to hear it, stopped me short and said we're not here to debate or something along those lines.. Thats what struck me as being odd, the guy is very well known here for being very knowledgeable about firearms and the laws, then he goes off on a spill like that, it had me wondering. I'll keep the hollow points in mine, not only for the stopping power, but the penetration issues as well...

I stated with the castle type laws that were put in here in Texas, that we were good for that. I would think personal protection would override the "oh you were looking for trouble and intended bodily harm" types. You darn right I intended bodily harm, it's the bg or me and the family. I'm not going to just set there and take it. Thanks also for the other links, I'll look them up as well. I tried to search for something like this before posting but must have missed them. I'm glad I found this forum.

IANAL, but I believe that when you take your CHL class you and your son will be taught that the goal of using your firearm for self defense should be to stop the threat rather than attempting to do bodily harm. Making such a statement that you "darn right wanted to do bodily harm" would do far more damage to your defense than carrying hollowpoint ammunition.
:iagree:
Choose your words carefully. You dont want to kill or do bodily harm. That is what the BG is doing. You are the Good Guy, therefore you are trying to stop the threat of bodily hard or death. :txflag:

So the chances of hurting an innocent are lessened. They can also cause more damage to internal organs with proper shot placement and hopefully halt your attacker more efficiently. That is, after all, what you're trying to do -- stop the attack, not kill the person.

Even worse, ask the judge what ammo he's packing under the robe!

So, in this instructor's mind, carrying hollow points is bad in the court's eyes, but the fact that you are carrying a concealed handgun is good? If there is a lawyer out there that can clarify this, jump in. To me, it seems a little trivial as too what ammo you load.

It would be hilarious (to me) to hear a DA in court say "So, you chose a +p instead of a low grain .45 to carry in your firearm?"

To me, the fact that we carry as law abiding citizens shout negate any perceived fore-thought about 'intent' as to what kind of ammo we use, IMO.

Since this feller is a member of this forum, maybe he can post up on the thinking behind this. There have been cases in the past where a DA made an issue of bullet style used. I remember reading about it in some of Masood Ayoob writings in American Rifleman back in the early 1980's. I just can't remember the details. Maybe the instructor mentioned can elaborate a little bit for us.

I have 13 rounds of Hornady TAP in my XD. Thinking about it now, the cases are black; wonder if they could be considered "assault ammo"...

I carry Speer Gold Dot in all my guns with the exception of my P3At. I carry FMJ in the .380 so I can penetrate the BG's T-shirt.

LOL....T-shirt??? That's funny. I have heard the same opinion from others on the 380. I would love to see some side by side ballistics on this issue.

Speaking of Mas Ayoob, here's an article of his titled "Choose Your Ammo...Police Style" that may interest some.

Thanks, that's the article from which I was thinking.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
