Your first post was fine because it was discussing the lack of critical information concerning a suspect the police are warning about and asking the public's assistance in locating. The forum rule deals with blatant racist comments and discussions, as well as posts/threads whose sole purpose is to discuss race as a stand-alone issue.caldvn wrote:Aww crap, I hit race...Off-Topic

Hot?seamusTX wrote:OK, here's the deal: The Galveston County Daily News is not PC. They print racial and other identifying information when it is known and appropriate, as well as mug shots of arrested persons and occasionally Identikit images.
This type of story is usually a transcription of a police report. Sometimes these reports are explained in real time by a police spokesman. Often they are e-mailed to the reporter. The reporter has no first-hand information and often cannot interview eyewitnesses (minor children, for example).
Racial identification is not, pardon the pun, black and white. Skin tone appears in every shade from pink to purple. Many people in this country are described as mixed-race, whether that is African-European or Peruvian-Japanese.
Any witness might find it difficult to identify a race if he sees the offender for a short time (like in a purse-snatching) or in poor light.
Mexican is not a race, it's a nationality; and you can't tell by looking. Asian is meaningless. Filipinos look very little like Pakistanis, but both are from Asia.
What race is this woman? - Jim
I understand the point, but when one person is "obviously" one race/nationality... what then? Let's say for the woman, she appears caucasion (kind of hot, but hey I'm not here to judge on people's preferences.) We're not defining her as caucasian, but appears caucasian. Does that offend the criminial for what they appear to be, so we have to avoid saying it all together? Are we to the point where we have to do DNA testing to justify calling someone for what they appear to be? Isn't that why some forms you fill out they ask "asian/pacific islander" "caucasian" "african american" etc...? Can we at least say something like that without offending someone?seamusTX wrote:OK, here's the deal: The Galveston County Daily News is not PC. In that case, the Daily News prints the information. Other articles that I quoted in this thread explicitly stated that the suspects were white or Hispanic. I have read many other articles where suspects at large were described as black.caldvn wrote:I understand the point, but when one person is "obviously" one race/nationality... what then?
At this point, he could be a tanned Caucasian, a Mexican, an Indian, a Pakistani, an Arab, or any number of mixed-race possibilities.Officer: What race was the man?
Victim: I dunno.
Was he black?
No.
Was he white?
Maybe.
What color was his skin?
Kinda brown.
Was he Mexican?
I don't know.
Thanks. All you have to do is read the newspaper wherever you live, and check http://news.google.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. That's all I do.I don't keep tabs with Galveston Daily News, I'll take your word on that they aren't PC. (I think you read more news then everyone here combined... Oddly enough I get more news from your posts then elsewhere. :P)
We used to refer to these as to a male with a dark complexion. This allowed for all of the various possibilities.seamusTX wrote: At this point, he could be a tanned Caucasian, a Mexican, an Indian, a Pakistani, an Arab, or any number of mixed-race possibilities.
My guess: Chinese (at least partially)I will let y'all guess the race or ethnicity of the foxy lady for a couple of days. While you're at it, guess her age. I think you will be surprised.
