We've actually been discussing a similar topic on another board I frequent. I won't post a link because the guys tend to be pretty vulgar, but here's an (edited) excerpt:

I grabbed a 2-year-old by the collar before he ran out into the street. I looked afterward, and there weren't any cars coming, but I still feel a little better about myself. I like to think I'm aware of my surroundings, but I often space out thinking deep thoughts. I'm glad I'm able to snap out of it quickly and act decisively.

I only just realized what a mistake this was. I could have been convicted of restraining a child, which is a sexual offense. My name would have gone into the registry.
There have been cases where that's exactly what happened to some poor sap. In one case, the guy was acquitted, but the judge ordered him added to the registry anyway because he grabbed the kid by the arm, which is something that sex offenders often do.
Strictly speaking, it's always safer to not help. I could have been hit by a car too if he was big enough to pull me forward. There's a tourist attraction out over Lake Michigan, and the drownings are low, due to safety measure, but always even. Every time someone falls in, someone jumps in to save them and they both get pulled under by the intense currents.

Speaking of drowning, a man driving around saw an unattended toddler wandering, but he drove on by, worried that he would be seen as trying to abduct her and convinced himself her parents were nearby. She had escaped from a nearby child care facility and was found drowned in a pond.

But really, this just adds to public disdain for judges, which isn't nearly enough. Judges are supposed to be implacable, logical, perceptive bastions of the spirit of the law. Who are they appointing to be justices these days? It's like they pull people in off the street!
