OK, I know I'm race baiting, but there is just so much of it in the news lately I wanted to get in onto the fun. A lot of our gun restrictions were written to keep minorities disarmed.

You're joking, right???
Mostly,
but a lot the debate about on campus carry this legislative session seemed to center around A&M and UT the big high profile schools. The real need for the students and cadre to be able to protect themselves is at the inner city schools Such as U of H or community colleges. The media didn't pick up on these schools, where the real need was.

The specific law that I believe was racially motivated is the travelling law before the MPA. Clean cut white people would be seen as travelling while others who didn't fit the image, could be charged with the vagueries permitted under the law.

The folks who really need to be armed are the ones who typically don't arm themselves. Young adults. females, Minorities and and the elderly. Middle aged / middle income guys like myself tend to arm ourselves better than other groups
Liberty''s Blog
"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom." John F. Kennedy

What would a CHL holder do in this situation, fire on the suspect car as it sped away?

Every time we - as gun rights supporters - say "see, a CHL could have stopped that crime" (as if having a CHL makes us all some version of police with super powers) we make ourselves and our argument look a bit ridiculous to the average citizen.

A better argument for our cause, IMHO, is that this incident (and others like it) simply disprove the antis' argument against CHL on campus - that keeping guns off campuses (Gun Free Zones) somehow protects anyone from crime.

I know we're getting off topic here, but whatever. The majority of debate probably centered around those two schools because they're the biggest and most recognizable of the Texas schools. I know what you're saying about historical gun laws being designed to keep minorities from owning guns, but the case today seems to be against any of us having guns. In addition, I'd be curious to see how many legislators in the Texas congress went to either Texas or A&M. I'd be willing to bet a few of them. That probably swayed debate towards these schools as well.

I have stayed out of this thread until now.

I agree with Byron Dickens, Joe817, Austin Realtor, and Liberty. No legal measure would have prevented this crime. Drive-by shooters are cowards who nearly always get away from the scene, because they do not attack places that have a machine-gun nest with radar and air support. ;-)

I also have to point out that anyone could have carried at this event. It was outdoors and not sponsored by the college.

Anyway, police have identified a suspect, as they say:
