When you qualify at the range, make sure you miss the target a few times. That way you'll have an excuse for shooting center mass because you aren't a perfect shot.

This reminds me...

I actually was told, by a pretty (in?)famous former radio personality who has a gun shop in NW Houston (not naming names XD), that when you take the CHL Course, they keep the qualifying target, and will use it against you in any shooting case. If you make one giant hole in the center, you will be portrayed as a professional killer, and if you are all over it, they will portray you as an amateur not capable of handling a gun properly...

I don't know where he was going with that, because not 5 seconds later, he told everyone that they should take the course held by his shop, because it's the best in Texas.

They gathered all the targets up and burned them in a big steel trash can.
Also, you weren't scored. You were given a "Pass" or Fail"

Apparently you will have to submit All of your stuff BEFORE Taking a class now? That makes no sense.
Also, 300 question exam? Seriously?

Talk about complete hooey, and shock tactics to try to get people to sign up for their classes right there. These people should be ashamed of their marketing tactics!

Was he an MP by chance? A lot of MPs I've talked to said when they were in it was policy not to carry with one chambered.

A buddy told me to never carry a handgun in your car without a CHL. I Asked if he knew about the MPA. He said he did but it didn't matter. Apparently he was told by a constable he was talking to, that if you were caught in your car with a handgun and no CHL it went into a FBI database even if you were not arrested. Then when you would try and apply for a CHL you would be turned down because of your FBI record. I tried to tell him Texas was a must issue state and if you met the criteria as an applicant you could not be denied. But hey he heard that from a constable and well i am just some guy who likes guns so who is more believable? Anyways, he is usually pretty good with his knowledge on stuff like this so it caught me off guard.

my immediate response was "If I miss 8 times (1911) then I deserve to have my empty gun wrestled from my hands and beaten to death with it"

After I studied the study I said. "Do you realize when you take suicide out of the data set and ONLY LOOK AT self defence use of a gun that you are 5 times more likely to survive the encounter than if you are unarmed?"

Could you post a link to the study so we may bone up on this, too?

As for the tent comment, this was as we were almost home... and let's just say that she wasn't really the kind of girl that would fit in my 4 person tent if it was just us two in there (and I'm skinny ).

We all know someone.... someone who thinks that they know the law, or know how things work, but in reality have no clue.

I made this thread so we can all share any 'gems' that have been told to us by these people.

Today, I was informed that "Shooting someone in the leg isn't [lethal force], since you're not trying to kill them", and that "It's considered the same as punching someone. You're allowed to do it before you're allowed to shoot to kill."

My answer to those kinds of things is usually along the lines of, "I'm not allowed to 'shoot to kill' under any circumstances. That would be murder. I am, however, allowed to 'shoot to stop,' and if that results in the other guy's death, well then, that's what it took to stop them."

I briefly had that discussion at Cabela's with a lady and her husband. If I mentioned that I could only shoot to stop they insisted that would mean I wasn't in fear for my life and therefor I'd be guilty of murder. Whatever, I generally don't feel a need to argue with random people who are set in their own (wrong) opinions, so I just let it go.

This was back when I was an Epidemiologist with the a Health Dept. I had access to databases and when studies would come out using databases that I had access to I could double check the statistics.

When you see gun related death the older studies (and many new ones) will lump accidental, intentional, and self inflicted wounds. You have to read the structure of the study to tease this out.

Nationwide the rate of mortality in a gun related incident (non suicide) is 3 in 1,000,000. While Suicide with a firearm is 58 per 1,000,000. You can see how suicide drowns out if it is not removed.

All of this is available online through the CDC using WONDER.

Only way I can see people making sense of the not chambering a round thing is if they were taught that.

I won't get into specific tactics and methods of chambering/not chambering rounds in short and long guns for my debt, but there are many schools of thought.
