I live about 30 minutes south of Dallas, I appreciate your suggestion and may just do that. Right after I bought my pistol I did take a beginning safety and shooting class before I so much as dry fired the darn thing. It was one to one instruction and based on self defense situations and prep for the CHL class. During the classroom part of the class I remember the instructor talking about sight picture and shooting with both eyes open. Once on the range, however, I was aiming with one eye closed and it didn't dawn on me until the last ten rounds or so. Overall the class and instructor were very informative. If anything I feel I can safely and confidently handle my weapon, at least in a dry fire or range setting. During my subsequent trips to the range I've felt kind of lost though. I'm hitting the target and getting decent groupings but feel like I'm not really learning anything. That's why the above post I commented on struck a chord in me: I realized I was sort of putting the cart before the horse, so to speak, in focusing more on "did I hit the target" without seeing and getting a feel for what the gun was actually doing in my hand. Anyway, sorry for rambling, and thanks again for the tip.Teamless wrote:Kadelic,Kadelic wrote: As a beginner,
What area are you in?
some on this forum, who go regularly to the ranges (and some private ranges) have taken other TexasCHLForum members to the range for instruction and help.
If you are interested in doing that, make a new post asking for range help or something, and see if anyone is in your area who is willing to help.
Many times people "know" what they are doing and don't ask for help, and those many of us do not like to go with, but to take someone who genuinely wants to learn is a great thing to be able to do.
Oh and for some of the private ranges, there are not range fees for guests, so you could save some on range costs, and put that towards ammo, and go more often possibly.
Just a thought
Also, thanks to the OP for starting this thread, this is exactly what I needed!

I do note that in most of the videos I see on defensive training, everyone looks so good. I have to wonder though what would it be like if PF (pucker factor) was introduced to make it more realistic. Hard to say how it could be done. Targets that shot back would be dangerous to everyone. Maybe, instead of following with just a timer, they could add a second guy/gal with a Louisville Slugger that could swing wildly at the shooter from behind every time the shooter was not behind cover or changing mags.
