CHL, 2nd form of ID?

This may be a little OT, but really not much. I have thought about this for awhile but this thread reminded me. Does anyone know if you can have both a Texas DL and a Texas ID and if so would your CHL be tied to both? This would solve the 2nd ID problem (not that it really is a problem). I have never understood how a credit card could be considered an ID.
I have heard that you can't have both a driver license and a state ID, but I can't confirm that on the DPS web site.stash wrote:Does anyone know if you can have both a Texas DL and a Texas ID and if so would your CHL be tied to both? This would solve the 2nd ID problem (not that it really is a problem). I use my passport when I need additional ID. You now need a passport to enter the U.S. by air from any other country, Next year, unless they change the rules again, you'll need one to enter by land, so it's a good idea to get one. Unfortunately, they cost around $100.
I agree that credit cards are not identification.

I see quite a few people who have both. Visitors and contractors at work have to surrender their ID until they leave, for accountability. Many get a state ID just for this purpose.seamusTX wrote:I have heard that you can't have both a driver license and a state ID, but I can't confirm that on the DPS web site.stash wrote:Does anyone know if you can have both a Texas DL and a Texas ID and if so would your CHL be tied to both? This would solve the 2nd ID problem (not that it really is a problem). I also get CHLs from them on occasion.

DPS cannot set policy for private business. If the business wants to accept your CHL or Blockbuster card as ID they can. There is no law prohibiting your use of your CHL as such.lrb111 wrote:I certainly think it should, but the answer is "No", from the DPS legal dept. here's a thread

Since I just recently moved to Texas and I had to get my nifty paper temp drivers license and surrender my old nevada license I was left without any form of state issued picture ID other than my Utah and Nevada CCW permits.
I fly all the time for work and for the last 2 weeks I have been thru the airports in Austin, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Seattle, Las Vegas and Little Rock using my utah CHL without a problem. One guy so far has asked if I had it on me, other than that nobody has even looked at me funny for not showing a drivers license.
My drivers license came this week while I was away so I will not have to show my CHL again (I hate showing it to anyone, its none of their business) and Im quite happy about that.
My point is that it is easily accepted by just about anyone as a regular form of state issued ID. Its not the preferred id for most folks, but it works in a pinch. =)

I used it (it's on the top of my wallet) to cash a check at Chase downtown and the clerk just looked a little uncomfotable - but she still cashed my checkJohnTheHead wrote:I've never heard of anyone getting taken in for causing a disturbance by displaying their CHL in a bank, but I probably wouldn't be shocked if it happened (I'm not saying it's right, just that it wouldn't surprise me...)
I wasn't carrying anyway
Some time ago in the mid 80's I found myself trying to get a quick passport, From the Federal building in Boston. I needed 2 forms of ID. I presented my Massachusetts Pistol permit. and the guy freaked out. Gave me a big lecture how a gun permit can not be used for something like a lpassport. I explained it was goverment ID with a picture. I ended up having friends swear they knew me for 2 years etc.
