If just for home personal protection my suggestion would be a 20gauge. If they may carry as well then I would suggest glock 26 for ease of use and reliability. My hands are small and weak and I didn't have any problem racking and shooting the glock. I prefer the 1911 so I don't personally own a glock but they are a real solid firearm.

My wife handled a lot of pistols before buying and finally she decided she liked my Glock 19.
We bought another just for her.
However, she kept having stove pipe problems. Me, shooting the same pistol, stove pipes NEVER happened. So, it wasn't the pistol.
Finally she analyzed the problem. The grip was too big for her trigger finger to adequately reach and thus the problems. With the advise of a very knowledgable member here, we had the grip reduced.
Now, she shoots without any hiccups.
We bought another just for her.
