The cost for the various rifle bags range significantly from $40.00 or so, up to $100.00 plus.

Is there that much difference in overall quality or much better protective padding or is it that the higher cost bags offer most pockets to store mags, or what...?

So far, I've only taken my AR away from my home once and yes, that may change some day, (currently I've have a range in my backyard, so no need to travel) thus I can't see a need for a plus $100.00 case - but, maybe I'm not educated about these things as I need be...

However, it seems to me that the $40.00 to $60.00 bags will do an adequate job.

As for a discrete bag, which I don't need, I'd pay $20.00 for the guitar case before I'd pay mega bucks for an actual discrete gun case, but that's me...

I have 3 "AR" type soft cases. One is a plain jane "$40" black case with 3 or 4 external mag pouches, and no protective padding for the gun. One is a Voodoo Tactical double rifle case. It has three external pouches that are internally configured to carry multiple magazines, tools, cleaning supplies, etc. The third is one of those "stealth" cases that looks like a skateboard pack.

Of the three, the skateboard pack is the least easy to use in terms of carrying extras like magazines. The plane jane one is OK, but limited. The one I use most of the time—even to carry only one gun—is the Voodoo Tactical case. I have 4 weapons that will fit in it, and I can carry any two of them together:
  • lightweight M4 carbine with EOTech mounted
  • slightly heavier HBAR carbine with 4x32 ACOG mounted
  • 18" barreled AR10 SASS rifle with a 5-15x50mm long range scope mounted
  • 16" barreled Ruger Gunsite Scout with a 1.5-5x32mm scout scope mounted
  • 18" barreled pump action shotgun
There's room in the external pouches for a lot of magazines/reloads for any of these guns, so it is extremely versatile in that regard and is "mission adaptable", although for me that means primarily transportation to and from the range. It has one other advantage......it closely matches in color the interior of my vehicle, so it is not as likely to jump out to any looky-loos checking out my SUV.

TAM,

Thanks for the great info.

I just read another thread warning me away from using a guitar case. It seems the adviser is a musician who said an observable guitar case is a "steal me" invitation to thieves. So, I'll scratch the guitar case idea off the list.

So far the Voodoo and/or the Blackhawk cases appeal to me.

Roger that. Buying Christmas presents for others got in the way of buying a bag for me :???: .

In researching carry bags for my AR/ARs, I've a few questions: Some mfgs. offer 1 3/4", 2" ,or 2 1/2" padding - is there an optimum? Some times less is more...

Also, if an AR has an overall length of 30", what would be an ideal length bag?

How much extra height do you really need for a scoped AR?

Plus, are extra magazine carriers on the exterior a good idea or none at all - should they all be located inside? (not for P.C. reasons, but for sheer bulk?)

Finally, what is a must for any AR case?

johncanfield, I'm guessing you have some of these questions also?

It's a great bag, just not what I needed.
