Re: Question About Left-Eye Dominance

I am also a left eye dominant-right handed shooter.

I had struggled with this in my youth and no one could tell me what was wrong. Until one day when the student became the master. I learned on my own.

The eye dominance test: Place you hands out in front of you and make circle (or sometimes its more like a triangle) with you thumbs and index finger of both hand overlapping and focus on a distant object using both eyes. Close one eye and then the other. The eye you still see the target out of is your dominate eye.

For pisols, using iron sights, I learned to simply shut my right eye instead of my left and adjust my head a little and I was on target. Easy fix for beginners. But then I simply learned to shoot both eyes open, which is the best way. Takes care of any eye dominance issues and gives you a better field of view with quicker target aquistition.

For any kind of rifle or shotgun with a red dot or holographic sight, use both eyes open to look throught the sight and with a traditional scope it doesnt matter either (at least for me it doesnt).

Now for a rifle or shotgun with irons, I can temporarily change my eye dominance by closing my dominant eye first, then focusing on the sights of the gun after aligning the gun in the right handed position. (same as using an eye patch I suppose)

If I perform the eye dominance test starting with my dominant eye closed then going through the procedure I find my dominant eye has changed. When I open both eyes and put my hands down and then go through the test starting with both eyes open, my eye dominance has switched back to normal.

Here is what I experienced after complete loss of my right eye sight.
1. It really doesn't matter which eye is dominant if you shoot with both eyes open.
2. Changing the dominant eye is not necessary, would take a long time and is problematic too. Covering one eye while shooting won't do the trick. It would require to disable (blind) the dominant eye for a long period of time and it does cause dizziness and imposes a risk having accidents.
3. For improving the eyesight I'd suggest to take advantage of the Schneider- Meyer procedure aka "Yoga for the Eyes". It helped me to get my vision partially back from complete loss of my eyesight. Besides that it is good lecture for everybody.
4. It is proven fact that a humans eyesight has a lots to do with the diet and the physical fitness and well being in general.
5. The eyesight is a sensation and the eyes are actually just a part of it. Damaged optical nerves, brain conditions after an accident or high fever for example can cause loss or change of eyesight as well.

A link to the "manual for your eyes" is below. A video can be purchased at Amazon.com or your local book store may have it as well. I found out about this when I needed it and it works if you have patience. My eye doctor did not tell me about it!

I hope this helps you and your child!

Follow-Up: Left-Eye Dominance

Post by Vol Texan »

Well, I was the one who started this thread, so I figured I owed you all a follow-up.

I started shooting her left-handed last week. First time was challenging - she kept switching hands again because that is how she has learned since the beginning.

The second time, however, was awesome. Below is one of the videos that I took this past weekend on her second outing as a lefty. Sure, she's only shooting at about 3 yards, but when shooting right-handed at that distance she couldn't hit the paper. Now, the grouping is a lot better, and she is a lot more excited about it!

its so much more fun when your hitting the target :thumbs2: I was left eye dominate for a loong time until i was a private in the Army. i never shot rifles much as a young adult. it was alwase my shot gun. i shot both eyes open. the Army of course uses rifles so i found out quick i couldn't shoot but i learned to shoot with my right eye "im right handed". It took a while but i now im a decent shot with a rifle and decent with my pistol. It just took practice and training. But i don't know how much patience your little one has with training. glad you have her shooting left handed and hitting the target though. :fire

And that will give Vol Texan's daughter more confidence and incentive to keep shooting.
