There are advantages and drawbacks to every form of carry. The purse actually has some tactical advantage if it's owner is willing to carry a certain way and have a hand inside while walking.
Since I like having my hands free, I prefer to carry on my body. However, I've found it to be a challenge. It's next-to-impossible to hide a pistol without completely changing my wardrobe. It's also frustrating to go into a dressing room, try on an outfit, and think, "Can I hide a gun under this?"
Even when a woman changes her style of dress, there's only so much gun she can carry without the bulge being too obvious. I put my .45 at the 4 o'clock position under my clothes this past Christmas. My dad & uncle snickered, saying I needed another one to balance out the other hip.
Back to the drawing board.
When I can get away with it, I like to have two: the little one on my hip and the big one in my purse. However, I usually end up having only one, and it's usually the little gun. Is it the best set-up? No. Is it better than nothing? Certainly.
Just like men, women do what they can and try different things.
Each woman does what works for her and evaluates her own situation.
Talking to one particularly talented IDPA shooter on the forum, I discovered that she rarely carries on her body. She also doesn't tend to carry in a purse specifically made for a gun (Galco or Coronado). However, she tends to run errands and do things with her husband, who carries a .45 on his hip (and probably a back-up somewhere else). This guy can draw and shoot faster than most people can blink, so I can understand her confidence.
