Before reading this thread, I didn't even realize that barrels had serial numbers. Guess I should pay more attention when I am looking at my guns' parts.

Which begs the question of why do barrels have serial numbers? I thought the lower was the only serialized part, and I know that I can buy a replacement barrel without going through an FFL.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to know the why, but the Glocks are the only guns I own that have the SN on the barrel. I believe my 1911, P225, and M&P only have the SN on the frame(could be wrong on those, don't have them in front of me). Glocks are my primary carry weapon so they get the most face time.

I never really put too much thought into it until I was contemplating selling my Glocks at some point and realized they were converted calibers. Always something new to learn.

not all do.
depends on the manufacturer, and probably the factory location and target market. Some come from the factory with serial numbers (Glock, Browning Hi power), others do not (almost any 1911 I've seen...)

If you buy aftermarket barrels in the US, I don't think any of them have serial numbers.
