Do you carry extra ammunition?

The Bianchi speed strip with .38s in it seems to always be in the left front pocket - even on days when I carry a 9mm. Other than the loaded magazines in the truck door pocket, I carry a second gun far more often than a spare magazine.

I''m now carrying double pouch with 2 magazines of 15 each for my sigma 9mm. Since I saw most of you do carry extra's. I know my sigma magazines can carry 16 but I have one tough time getting 15 in them.

Yup. One extra for whatever I'm carrying... for one it's a 15 for the other it's a 6 single stack. For both reasons cited, extra ammo and an extra magazine.

No you don't. I appreciate your support but unfortunately there are quite a few of our officers that shouldn't even have a handgun, more or less a rifle.

I put the blame solely on our department though. Only having to qualify once a year with 50 rounds is nuts. It should be once every other month at the minimum. If you don't pass the qualification you should be gone. Our pistol qualification is very easy so there is no reason anyone should ever fail it. Every relay during annual qualifications has at least one horror story of some officer shooting someone else's target, a ND, can't get their pistol out of their holster, firearms that fail to function, firearms that weren't even loaded , and many other reasons that they fail to qualify. Then off they go for additional training until they do qualify. It's our department's version of "no child left behind".

Thanks goodness our Patrol Rifle school is not like this at all. Only volunteers who WANT to be there and go through a very tough and demanding course. Only people who commit to both a monthly regime and to a semiannual qualification course will stay qualified. If you miss a monthly zero check, or fail to qualify every six months, then you are out of the program. If you have a safely violation - no warning, just turn in your weapon & gear and head home.

Some of you might recall the old show with Chuck Connors called Branded. Remember how at the first it shows him having his sword taken away, broken in two, and then being marched in shame through his fellow soldiers? Our rifle program is the same way. The minute someone has a safety violation, or fails any portion of the qualification course, they are ordered to the front of the group. Once they get up front the lead instructor takes their rifle and gear and then they begin the "walk of shame" back to the classroom.

The purpose of this process is to get every one's attention that they are serious about this training - that it's not like our pistol program. Most people tend to pay close attention from day one and the ones that don't need to be gone - they don't need to be deploying an AR-15 with a lackadaisical attitude. Everyone that's made it through the program wishes that our pistol program had these same standards.

Two extra mags of .45 IWB. Two extra mags in the truck console and two in the "Gererals" Suburban console. Just like the Amex commercial.....don't leave home without it.

Yup. Primary carry is the Kimber UC stuffed with Wilson Combat 7 round mag usually with 2 more somewhere on me.

What exactly "is" extra ammunition???

If the intent is to have a backup mag in case you have a failure in that regard, then yup...

If you have problems after that, then I don't know what to say...Or do...

What you need to ask yourself is this...

What is the maximum threat I can effectively deal with, with zero perceivable mechanical or tactical issues...

Then adjust your carry mindset to that...Anything outside that scope is a distraction and one that WILL keep you from realistically meeting a threat against you...

The amount of "extra ammunition" and back-up mags becomes a moot point...Thus your skills in dealing with a threat with what you realistically carry with you becomes the focus...

I voted yes, because I tend to carry at least a spare mag somewhere - but I've gone without numerous times. Frankly, if the best option is to draw and fire, the first magazine is likely to still be mostly full when all is said and done. If it ends up that I'm simply not armed well enough for a good outcome, it is very much time for PrayerModeâ„¢. If, as a civilian, I walk into the middle of something that'll require 20+ rounds to get out of, I've got serious problems - and another magazine probably isn't going to fix those.

When Carrying a Colt Official Police in shoulder holster
2 speedloaders in holster pouch under left arm (one loaded with Semi Wadcutters Remington 158 gr, one loaded with 200 gr Winchester Super Police), 2 speedloaders in right pocket loaded with Lead Hollow Points Remington 158 gr, one speedloader in left pocket loaded with Lead Hollow Point Buffalo Bore 158 gr for extra power if needed and finally a dump pouch on my right hip.

When carrying Colt Official Police on hip, the first two speedloaders are left out with the holster everything else remains.

When carrying Colt Detective Special, sometimes I just carry the dump pouch on right hip, sometimes I'll put two speedloaders in right pocket.


Always have a minimum of 12 rounds on me. What is in the gun and at least one full reload. A maximum of 42 rounds.
