Re: CHL quals with a revolver
So, here's a vaguely related question:
Spousal Unit may at some time consider getting a CHL. She's shot my semi-autos (1911a1, Star BM 9mm, Kel-Tec P11 9mm) but finds it very difficult to
a) push the rounds into the magazine
b) rack the slide (the Star is the easiest, but she doesn't find it that easy)
Probably more practice would help, but right now her feeling is that she would have difficulty operating a semi-auto, and if she gets a CHL she would probably want to carry a revolver. I am, like most folks, in favor of maximizing my options so I have this question:
May I go with her to the shooting portion of the class and load the weapon for her, or does that seem out of line?
Instructors, what would your reaction be do this situation?
Thanks in Advance

There is nothing in the law or DPS regulations to prohibit you from doing so. In fact, if a person has a physical disability we not only can but must make reasonable accommodations (per the ADA) to help them qualify. This was expressly pointed out in one of my Instructor classes, but I can't recall when. You could do it in my class. To me it's no different that one of my shooting buddies coming to the class with 8 mags pre-loaded with 5 rounds and one with 10 rds.
Some instructors may object and I know some add "personal" requirements that exceed what the statute requires. For example, DPS does not designate a starting position so I cannot set my own standard. People can start from the low-ready, ready, or with the front sight on the "X." The only thing I won't let them do is start with the gun in the holster.
While I strongly encourage additional training, I don't feel CHL Instructors have the authority to add to the performance requirements set out in the statute and DPS regulations. We wanted a "shall issue" statute because we didn't want government employees coming up with their own requirements to obtain a CHL. I see no reason to empower private instructors with the authority to impose our personal performance standards either.
Chas.

I would allow it. Basically because I cannot fathom anyone carrying an empty weapon. It's going to be pre-loaded.der Teufel wrote:

When my wife and went for our instructors certs she was having a bad time with arthritis. (we are not young) I asked the range officer if I could load for her. He said, if she were merely getting a carry permit it would be fine, but since she was going to be an instructor, then no.
Then as he was giving final instructions to the entire group on the line, he started pre-loading her magazines. Nearly brought a tear..

It wasn't one of those times.

That sucks. To me the shooting qualification was the high spot of the day, but then the whole day was pretty interesting and educational. Those 10+ hours passed by pretty quickly it seemed to me and the range part was way too quick. I could have sent another 200 rounds down range.
