What is a proper response to this situation?

It seems like most people use a chl in place of a good ole whoopin.

If there isn't an object in the aggressive guys hand like a knife, bat, or gun then most likely we will be fighting if he gets close enough to justify it. MOST people try to act bold and think yelling in an aggressive manner will be enough to scare the victim and never really plan on using violence so they are not really prepared for getting a beat down.

Of course, if your carrying u have to decide if your weapon is in danger if up you fight.

I'm too old to go dishing out any "whoopin". I don't fight, I don't have any "skills" and I loth violence. A person can be seriously injured or killed by nothing but hands and feet, so the use of a firearm can be justified. If someone wants to fight me, they are asking for a gunfight whether they know it or not.

And I have yelled aggressively at a guy who wanted to fight, he backed off a bit, I left, he stood on the sidewalk yelling obscenities as I crossed the parking lot headed to my car. So it does work and no one got perforated. Had he persisted in perusing the fight, I would have shot him.

Somebody who wants to fight should go to a boxing or MMA gym. If he attacks me, I assume he wants to be shot.

The only warning will be the front sight of my Glock staring into the window of their soul and the simple command, "STOP!" or "DROP THE WEAPON!".

All are good options to a point and thinking ahead of the time is smart. When I have qualified over the years we would say "police stop" and "get your hands up" ect to get this added to memory with the other steps. Having good command presence is essential.

Add this to the equation. They don't comply and charge you. I'll never forget the first person I had at gunpoint that didn't comply and charged me screaming for me to shoot him. We take many felony suspects into custody at gun point and not all comply. This was uniformed patrol as well. I have been through that a few times now and it is unnerving. Point being just because you point a gun at somebody, it doesn't mean they will roll over and comply. I have also worked plain clothed and you add loosing the uniform factor which is a deterrent in it self.

I'm still a big fan of "SHOW ME YOUR HANDS." It clearly indicates to any bystanders that I consider the person a threat, while not stating any threat in return. It's also four really simply monosyllables.

If there's anything that can be construed as a weapon, then "DROP THE WEAPON" will help direct any witnesses' attention to that fact, so they're more likely to remember it in their statements. It also solidifies the reason you might be preparing to take some dramatic action that will significantly impact the person's ability to continue to present a threat to you.
