FWIW, a different viewpoint...... I know the dealer I bought mine from and thought I should warn him. I sent him a link to this thread and to the Springfield recall page. Here was his answer to me:
I am fully aware. There is no reason to worry about your XDS.

When insurance companies set liabilities, they issue acceptable loss limits. When that limit has been reached press releases are issued. That's all this is.

FYI, I get recalls 2-3 months before the public sees them. This is old news.

What is the best way to package these to send back? Original case, bubble wrapped in a box, etc?

So, I take it you are not sending yours in?

I went to Wal-Mart
bought a 6x6x6 box for $0.48
I bought some packing tape for $1.97
And some bubble wrap for $3
Unloaded the weapon
Wrapped alot with the bubble wrap
put it in the box
put more bubble wrap around it in the dead space in the box till it was nice and tight.
dropped it at FedEx office, where they scanned it in and gave me a receipt for it.

I haven't decided yet. I did initiate the process and get an RMA#, but I am still on the fence. I am bothered that Springfield won't tell customers how long the turnaround is.

I know this guy a little bit (my son works for him), and he seems very knowledgeable and very well-connected. He's a master gunsmith, an NFA Class III Manufacturer, as well as being a Class III Dealer. He's told me other things about Springfield that are not necessarily common knowledge. (For instance, he told me that Springfield stopped manufacturing M1A receivers in the early 2000s, which is why Smith Enterprises and others got into the game, but that they kept their receiver manufacturing equipment and have thousands of receivers on hand. I didn't know that. Did anybody else?)

Anyone thinking about not sending it back may want to read this XDTalk Forum post and the ones that follow before making a final decision.

Ironically, I will have two weapons back to Springfield.

I have a .45 XDm that has a failure to return to battery. I sent it back last week. They were great so far. Sent me the shipping label, I dropped it off at FedEx, now I am waiting for it to come back. i sent it back in the original box packed inside a cardboard box.

Because I like my XDm, and the XDs is very easy to shoot for a 9mm that size, we bought one for my wife's EDC. She had a feed failure on the very first bullet she tried to load. Then we learned about the recall, so it's going back too. Not taking any chances.

Fortunately, we have other weapons for EDC. While I have really enjoyed my XDm, having problems with now two Springfields is a little concerning. I'm confident they will make it right.

I bought an XDS in 9mm last week. I haven't even fired it yet... :(

Anyway, I entered my info into the website via my Kindle Fire and promptly got a black screen that didn't resolve. Tried again from a PC and got a message that they already had my info, but were having a problem printing the label. Website directed me to call their call center. Waited on hold for about 15 minutes. Deb, the call center agent, was great and is sending me the label.

They are quoting 3 - 4 weeks for the repair. I didn't ask, but I'm assuming that is from the time it is dropped off at FedEx.

I saw that guy's thread when he first started it...

I think it resulted from not cleaning the shipping grease from the striker well (in his defense, it wasn't in the manual to do this). The grease in the striker well collects dust and stuff...once it gets gunked up, the striker doesn't always fall back into the safe position resulting in the striker being in the position to hit the firing pin when the slide goes back into battery. Now, I am not a gunsmith but I do all the research I can on new things (especially guns) that I get...I learn everything I can about them.

The XDS needs a thorough cleaning (past the field strip cleaning suggested in the manual) prior to it having very many rounds thrown through it.

I'm not saying the guy did anything wrong and it is commendable that SA is doing what they can to make it right.

I AM going to send my pistol back to them for service but, in my mind, this particular condition is not an issue because of the maintenance I have done to mine. Then again, I am not an armorer and they have more experience with modern arms than I have AND they designed the dad-blamed thing...lol. The new grip safety lever has an additional roll pin in it suggesting addition of more moving parts. I am curious to see what all they changed...

The failure mode you described is one possibility. Another one is a disconnector failure of some type.

Just to be safe, I got a small tightly fitting box first to nestle the gun in there really nicely with a little bit of bubble wrap. Then, I put that box inside a slightly bigger box with some more bubble wrap. Taped up all the corners and lids - it seemed really secure.

I am dreading this whole procedure. This was my only subcompact, everything else is full size. Also, a major loss of time doing all this, and then making sure my wife or I are home on the day it comes back to sign for it. Not to mention several weeks of waiting, minimum...

I love Springfield, but I am extremely disappointed, and truly hope they would send an "apology goodie bag"... For consolation...

Late, to the game, but just wanted to thank to AndyC.

My 45 XDs, which hasn't malfunctioned, is in this recall lot. Since it's become a mainstay in my carry rotation, better to be safe than sorry.

I can't get a reply from the Springfield Armory regarding the turnaround time for the XD-S upgrade. I don't know, why they call it an upgrade - it's a repair or correction. I guess "upgrade" sounds like a positive event. Rumor has it that it would take approximately 4 weeks (unconfirmed). If it is true, does it include the shipping time back and forth? Or, is it just the repair time at the SA shop? I learned about the recall on Thursday, shipped the gun on Friday; because of the holiday, it won't get there until Wednesday. This is a whole week - from the notice 'til the receipt of my gun by the SA shop.

That's my only subcompact, and it's perfect for Texas summers. Am I the only one frustrated with this? Everyone else seems to be pretty cool about it. Nothing wrong with being calm. I am not steaming mad, but I am upset. I bought the darn gun just two weeks prior to the recall. Ordered a holster, bought ammunition.

I haven't even had time to break in the holster for it.

So, I hope someone has a time frame quote from the source.

Thank you in advance.

SA quoted 3-4 weeks when I spoke to them on Friday. It wasn't clear whether this included shipping time. My assumption is that it does.

Thank you! THAT is as concise an answer as I wanted to hear. Now I can relax about sending mine in.
