Nearly finished with my new AR build
Re: Nearly finished with my new AR build
TAM,
I've heard very good things about Timney triggers.

Free floating also reduces sling tension as a factor in the forces acting on the barrel - including bending forces and damping forces. For those using sandbags or other rests, it reduces the effect of bag placement along the handguard. The Annoyed Man wrote: But generally speaking, a floated barrel on most rifles will shoot more accurately than one that isn't. That isn't universal, by the way. Some makers will deliberately place a point of interference between stock and barrel to improve accuracy, but as a general rule, floating improves accuracy. Actually, stated more accurately (hyuck!), floating the barrel will improve consistency by freeing the barrel up to achieve its potential, but it won't make an bad barrel better. As a barrel heats up, pressure from the stock/handguard at 90º to the bore will cause the zero to wander. The barrel will do whatever it is capable of, and floating it will prevent the stock from making it worse by removing the source of any forces occurring 90º to the bore. .......again, as a general thing. But there are exceptions.
Nice looking AR, TAM!
The sooner I get behind, the more time I have to catch up.

Here's the one I used: http://www.timneytriggers.com/shop/timn ... igger.aspxAbraham wrote:TAM,

The MSRP is $228.75. I bought mine directly from Timney because both Brownells and MidwayUSA were sold out at the time. I like that it drops right in as a finished unit. You don't have to worry about getting the springs in right, and so on. You drop it in, push the hammer and trigger pins back in, and then tighten a couple of set screws that kind of lock the unit into place so there's no slop in the fit. It's available in 3, 4, and 4.5 lb pulls. They have a really short and crisp reset too. Mine is a 3 lb trigger, and it is wonderful.

If y'all haven't tried CMC triggers you really need to. I'll be putting a 2lb/2lb 2 stage from them in my long range ar soon. Plus they are made right here in Texas!

Re: Nearly finished with my new AR build
I've heard good things about them, and I understand they are a little cheaper too. But I already have Timneys in my Remington 700 and SCAR 17S, and you know what they say........if it ain't broke, don't fix it....... Timmy was a known quantity for me.jb2012 wrote:If y'all haven't tried CMC triggers you really need to. I'll be putting a 2lb/2lb 2 stage from them in my long range ar soon. I think they all "retail" at $229.99~ But if you hunt around I've seen them as low as 159.99The Annoyed Man wrote:I've heard good things about them, and I understand they are a little cheaper too. I may have to try out a timney on the 14.5" build I'm going for Christmas break.

Re: Nearly finished with my new AR build
Got to the range for the first time today with my new AR and suppressor. The rifle performed admirably. I love the gas piston system. Not that an AR recoils all that heavily, but the piston system almost totally eliminated what recoil there is. So, I first shot it unsuppressed, using the unmagnified T2 Micro optic, at 50 yards, and got it to shooting about 1.5-2.0 MOA with 55 grain ball. Chalk it up to old eyes. Then I mounted my ACOG and got that down to about 1 MOA. Had I had even higher magnification, I suspect I could have done better yet; but in any case, it shot well under minute of man.
Then I mounted the suppressor. it was AWESOME!!! The reference to "controls" at the beginning (the video starts mid-sentence) is to the fact that my carbine is fully ambidextrous in all controls, and being a lefty, I totally appreciate that. Also, the trigger is just completely sick. It rivals the trigger on my .308 bolt gun (also a Timney), and it has the shortest reset I've ever seen. You can hear the click of the trigger reset in the video, quite audibly, and it is so short you don't really see my finger letting it out.

You hear a second shot close on the heels of my first shot. That was a guy shooting a .22 squirrel gun of some kind, 2 lanes over from me. My suppressed AR was no louder than his .22. Why didn't I buy one of these things sooner? I can see that my hobby just got more expensive by a factor of at least 100%.

Re: Nearly finished with my new AR build
Andy, it is going to take a side-by-side comparison under equal circumstances. It looks like your test was in a more open area, whereas mine was on the 50 yard line at Elm Fork, which is a semi-enclosed environment with a concrete floor. So I hear a lot more echo on my video than I do on yours.

The interesting thing to me was also how the combination of the gas-piston system plus the suppressor nearly eliminated all recoil.

Re: Nearly finished with my new AR build
I think that my video is a good demonstration of how a suppressor will make the rifle much quieter but can't do anything about the crack of supersonic bullets. I'd like to load up some sub-sonics and see how much quieter it would be.
