Is 1911 worth the cost?

I takes a while for perception to change. Some people are having trouble accepting that American cars are as good and some are better than Japanese cars because they havent been for so long. It took a while for the Japanese cars to overcome their poor reputation for quality. For good reason too, in the mid and late 60's a new Toyota was doing good to get you back from a test drive. And when it did break, guess what, no parts.

Thing you have to bear in mind is that the Glock is like an Apple Mac - it's made only by that company, so they control what goes into manufacturing the base-product.

The 1911 is like a PC - it's is made by almost everyone and their dog, so when it comes to reliability, durability, accuracy, etc, you have to start looking at the manufacturers of your chosen model and their reputation - not only for the product itself, but in terms of customer-service.

If it's not IBM. I mean Colt. It's a clone. so when do the Chinese buy them?

There is a gun show at Dallas Market Hall this weekend. I think I may get my son in law and go check out some of the bove mentioned cheaper 1911's.

Great thread. I'm one of those "want one" 1911 guys. I love shooting them when I get a chance (though my only two NDs have been with 1911-pattern guns ). I'm thinking whenever I do go for it I'll likely go for the low level Springfield or the STI Spartan to start. Ultimately I think I'd like to have one full size all steel gun and one 3-inch alloy frame carry gun. Of course, might have to add a third (really split of first two) - a basic stock GI type full size AND a modded-out $1,5000 SHOOTER .... but that's for WAY later. Just a basic full size for now.

One question for your gurus, on STI's web site they list all their guns and - I think - only the Spartan is listd having a "bushing" barrel while all their other models have "bull" barrels. Anyone care to explain this to a 1911 novice? Is the bull barrel worth upgrading to a $900+ STI instead of the sub-$700 spartan model? Could a "bull" barrel be added later to a Spartan model with a "bushing" barrel?

How is it with other makers? Is bull barrel "newer" and "more advanced" in some way, and thus included on more custom guns like Kimbers and high end Springfields etc?

IIRC, some US military Rangers/Seals, etc, have the ability
to equip themselves with 1911's and have done so.

I assume that this is because the .45's have more punch than
the M9's in 9MM.

Even a HiPoint has enough MoM (Minute of Miltary) accuracy I would think. They are using there sidearms at very close ranges so as long as it goes bang I would assume it would hit where needed. AndyC explained it best why the 1911 was chosen. Punch, speed and trigger pt the 1911 ahead of the M9.

I really think the answer to this question depends on each individual's need. For high end shooters, of course it is worth the money; for guys like me who can only maintain a 5 inch group at 10 yards, probably not.
